Description
半導体ナノ結晶では、光誘導放出が、ナノ結晶のバンドエッジ状態から起こる。発光ナノ結晶からのバンドエッジ放出は、表面電子状態から生じる放射性および非放射性の崩壊チャネルと競合する。X. Pengら、J. Am. Chem. Soc.、30巻:7019〜7029(1997年)。その結果、ダングリングボンドなどの表面欠陥の存在が無放射性再結合中心を提供し、放出効率の低下に寄与する。この表面トラップ状態を不活性化し、除去する効率的で永続的な1つの方法が、ナノ結晶の表面に無機シェル(shell)材料をエピタキシャル成長させる方法である。X. Pengら、J. Am. Chem. Soc.、30巻:7019〜7029(1997年)。シェル材料は、電子準位がコア(core)材料に対してI型であるように(例えば電子および正孔をコアに局在化させる潜在的なステップを提供するためより大きなバンドギャップを有するように)選択することができる。その結果、無放射性再結合の確率を低下させることができる。
一実施形態では、本発明は、複数の発光ナノ結晶を含む組成物を気密封止する方法を提供する。適当にはこの方法は、発光ナノ結晶を封止するために組成物上にバリア層を配置することを含む。全体を通じて論じたとおり、用語「気密」、「気密封止」および「気密封止された」は、全体を通じて、容器を通過しまたは組成物内に浸透し、かつ/あるいは発光ナノ結晶と接触するガス(例えば空気)または水分の量が、ナノ結晶の性能(例えばルミネセンス)を実質的に達成しないレベルまで低減されるような態様で、組成物、容器および/または発光ナノ結晶が調製されたことを示すために使用される。したがって、「気密封止された組成物」、例えば発光ナノ結晶を含む気密封止された組成物は、ある量の空気(あるいは他のガス、液体または水分)が組成物内に浸透し、発光ナノ結晶と接触して、その結果、ナノ結晶の性能(例えばルミネセンス)が実質的に達成されまたは影響を受ける(例えば低下する)ことを許さない組成物である。
気密封止された容器の調製
PMMAの押出成形によって、2mm×0.5mmの空洞を有する寸法約3mm×0.5mmの長方形の管が調製される。次いで、管の全長に、蛍光発光ナノ結晶を含む溶液が充填される。次いで、この発光ナノ結晶溶液を硬化させる。次いで、管の中にナノ結晶を閉じ込めるため、管の複数の部分がヒートシールされる。適当には、この充填および封止が不活性雰囲気中で実行される。次いで、管の外面に、バリア層(例えばSiO2、TiO2またはAlO2)を配置することができる。
Claims (13)
- 気密封止されたガラス毛管の容器を備え、
前記容器が、当該容器の中に配置された固体又は半固体構造を含み、
前記固体又は半固体構造が、
硬化されたマトリックス材料;及び
前記硬化されたマトリックス材料に埋め込まれた複数の発光ナノ結晶を含む、LEDと組み合わされて用いられる装置。 - 前記発光ナノ結晶が半導体材料を含む、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 前記発光ナノ結晶が、コア−シェル発光ナノ結晶を含む、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 前記コア−シェル発光ナノ結晶が、CdSe/ZnS、CdSe/CdS及びInP/ZnSから成る群から選択される、請求項3に記載の装置。
- 前記発光ナノ結晶が約1〜10nmのサイズである、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 前記ガラス毛管が毛管を被覆するバリア層を含む、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 前記バリア層が無機層を含む、請求項6に記載の装置。
- 前記無機層が、SiO2、TiO2、又はAlO2を含む、請求項7に記載の装置。
- 前記マトリックス材料が、発光ナノ結晶を含むポリマー層である、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 前記ガラス毛管は、接着剤で一端が封止される、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 前記接着剤がエポキシ樹脂を含む、請求項10に記載の装置。
- 前記ガラス毛管は、はんだで一端が封止される、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 前記ガラス毛管が一端で溶融封止される、請求項1に記載の装置。
