Description

(i)アセチレンブラック/ポリテトラフルオロエチレン混合物を含むガス拡散層を備える炭素繊維の導電性層と、硫化ロジウム触媒/ポリテトラフルオロエチレン混合物を含む触媒層と、イオン交換膜と結合するためのアイオノマーの層と、を備えるガス拡散電極、又は
(ii)開気孔型ガス拡散層と、硫化ロジウム触媒層と、アイオノマーと、を備える炭素不織布電極、である、
カソード半セルと、
前記アノード半セルと前記カソード半セルの間に配置され、少なくとも1のパーフルオロスルホン酸ポリマー層から成るイオン交換膜であって、支持材が、該パーフルオロスルホン酸ポリマーの層に埋め込まれている、イオン交換膜を具備し、
前記ガス拡散電極および前記イオン交換膜が、互いに隣接している電気化学セルであって、
250g/cm 2 の圧力下、60℃の温度で、前記ガス拡散電極と前記イオン交換膜が、その幾何学的面積に対して少なくとも50%の接触面積を有することを特徴とする、塩化水素の水溶液を電解するための電気化学セルを提供する。
実施例1
米国特許第6,402,930号および米国特許第6,149,782号に開示されているようなガス拡散電極を、100cm2の電気化学的作用面積を有する実験室用セルを使用する実験室試験において、950の当量を有する、Fumatechによって供給されたパーフルオロスルホン酸タイプのプロトン導電性イオン交換膜を用いて試験した。
実施例1で説明した酸素枯渇カソードを、幾つかの比較試験において、実施例1で説明した条件下、DuPont製のNafion(登録商標)324タイプのプロトン導電性イオン交換膜を用いて試験した。
異なる表面粗さを有する酸素枯渇カソードを用いる試験を、実施例1で説明した装置で、実施例1で定義した動作条件下で行った。
異なるイオン交換膜を通る塩素拡散を試験した。これは、動作条件下での水輸送指数との組み合わせで、カソード液中の異なる塩酸濃度として表す。電流ゼロの状態での開回路条件下で以下の膜を試験した:
−Nafion(登録商標)117:1100の当量を有する単層のもの;支持布なし
−Nafion(登録商標)324:1100および1500の当量をそれぞれ有する二層;酸素枯渇カソードに面している外付けの支持布を有するもの、すなわち、支持材がパーフルオロスルホン酸ポリマーに埋め込まれていないもの
−Fumatech製のイオン交換膜:950の当量および内在支持布を有する単層のもの、すなわち、支持材がパーフルオロスルホン酸ポリマーに埋め込まれたもの(以後、Fumatech膜950と呼ぶ)
7時間試験において、塩素拡散に関して以下の挙動が観察された:
Nafion(登録商標)117:3511mgの塩素
Nafion(登録商標)324:503mgの塩素
Fumatech膜950:1144mgの塩素
加えて、これら3タイプの膜を同等に作動させたところ、Nafion(登録商標)膜は、実施例1で述べた条件下、約1の水輸送指数(すなわち、膜を通過するプロトン1molあたり1molのH2O)を有し、これに対してFumatech膜は、0.37、すなわち約三分の一、の水輸送指数しか有していないことが判明した。
電解セルにおいて広く行われている条件をシミュレートしながら、ガス拡散電極(GDE)とイオン交換膜の間の接触面積を、以下の実験室試験を利用して測定した。
GDE表面の総合的な画像を、後方散乱および蛍光対比で得た。画像領域は、6.250×6.250mm2であった。後方散乱チャネルの光電子倍増管のゲインは、フルのレーザーパワー(レーザー出力、約22mW)のために322ボルトに設定した。蛍光チャネルについての光電子倍増管電圧は、1000Vであった。画像は、モード488/>590nmで撮った。この設定を使用して、前記スライドガラスをAr+レーザーからの波長488nmで照射した。同波長で後方散乱画像を記録した。蛍光チャネルでの画像は、590nmより長い波長であるサンプル表面からの蛍光から作成した。
Claims (7)
- 少なくともアノードを有するアノード半セルと、
カソードとしてのガス拡散電極を有するカソード半セルであって、該ガス拡散電極は
(i)アセチレンブラック/ポリテトラフルオロエチレン混合物を含むガス拡散層を備える炭素繊維の導電性層と、硫化ロジウム触媒/ポリテトラフルオロエチレン混合物を含む触媒層と、イオン交換膜と結合するためのアイオノマーの層と、を備えるガス拡散電極、又は
(ii)開気孔型ガス拡散層と、硫化ロジウム触媒層と、アイオノマーと、を備える炭素不織布電極、である、
カソード半セルと、
前記アノード半セルと前記カソード半セルの間に配置され、少なくとも1のパーフルオロスルホン酸ポリマー層から成るイオン交換膜であって、支持材が、該パーフルオロスルホン酸ポリマーの層に埋め込まれている、イオン交換膜を具備し、
前記ガス拡散電極および前記イオン交換膜が、互いに隣接している電気化学セルであって、
250g/cm2の圧力下、60℃の温度で、前記ガス拡散電極と前記イオン交換膜が、その幾何学的面積に対して少なくとも50%の接触面積を有することを特徴とする、塩化水素の水溶液を電解するための電気化学セル。 - 前記接触面積が、少なくとも70%であることを特徴とする、請求項1に記載の電気化学セル。
- 前記イオン交換膜が、パーフルオロスルホン酸ポリマーの層を少なくとも2つ有し、支持構造が、2つの層のうちの一方に埋め込まれていることを特徴とする、請求項1または2に記載の電気化学セル。
- 前記イオン交換膜が、異なる当量(g/eq)を有する層を少なくとも2つ有することを特徴とする、請求項3に記載の電気化学セル。
- 前記パーフルオロスルホン酸ポリマーの層が、600から2500の当量(g/eq)を有することを特徴とする、請求項1から4のいずれか一項に記載の電気化学セル。
- 前記ガス拡散電極に面している層が、他の層より高い当量(g/eq)を有することを特徴とする、請求項3から5のいずれか一項に記載の電気化学セル。
- 前記イオン交換膜が、金属、プラスチック、炭素および/またはガラス繊維、の細目金網、織布、ブレード、編生地、不織布または発泡体の支持材を有することを特徴とする、請求項1から6のいずれか一項に記載の電気化学セル。
