Abstract
PURPOSE: To lower electrolytic voltage and enhance a membrane life by a method wherein a layer faced to the cathode side of a fluorine type composite membrane having a reinforcing fabric embedded therein is ground and a thickness ratio of a fiber crossing part and a void part of said reinforcing fabric is specified.
CONSTITUTION: A layer faced to a cathode side of a fluorine type composite membrane having two membranes different in an equivalent wt. and a kind of an ion exchange group and a reinforcing fabric integrally embedded therein when said composite membrane is assembled in an electrolytic tank is ground by an appropriate process. Further, said fabric is embedded in such a manner that, in the crossing part of a constituent fiber 3 of said reinforcing fabric lined by a vacuum laminating process or the like, a layer thickness TK is 1μ or more and a ratio TK/TW of the layer thickness TK and a thickness TW of a void part is 0.9 or less. When said composite membrane is mounted in an electrolytic tank to electrolyze an alkali chloride, current distribution in the membrane becomes relatively uniform and, because electrolytic voltage is lowered, the membrane life is prolonged.
