Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce chlorine and phosphate efficiently with low voltage by segmenting an electrolytic cell with a cation exchange membrane, disposing electrodes via the gas and liquid permeable porous layers on the surfaces of said exchange membrane which do not act as electrodes, introducing an aq. soln. of alkali metal chloride into an anode chamber and a phosphoric acid-contg. aq. soln. into a cathode chamber and electrolyzing these.
CONSTITUTION: An electrolytic cell is segmented between its anode and cathode by a cation exchange membrane consisting of a fluorine-contg. polymer having carboxylic acid groups, sulfonic acid groups and phosphoric acid groups, whereby an anode chamber and a cathode chamber are formed. Gas and liquid permeable porous layers of 10W99% porosities and 0.01W200 microns thicknesses which do not act as electrodes are formed on the surfaces of the exchange membrane. At least one of the anode and cathode is disposed via these porous layers. Thereupon, an aq. soln. of alkali metallic chloride is introduced into the anode chamber and a phosphoric acid-contg. aq. soln. into the cathode chamber, and these are electrolyzed at 10W100A/dm2 current densities.
