Abstract
PURPOSE: To make current density in an exchange membrane uniform, lower electrolytic voltage and make possible stable operation by electolyzing alkali chloride in an electrolytic cell using the cation exchange membrane and porous flat plate anodes.
CONSTITUTION: In electrolyzing an aqueous alkali chloride soln. in an electrolytic cell divided into an anode chamber and a cathode chamber by a cation exchange membrane, a porous flat plate anode is used as an anode. In this case, gaseous Cl2 is the easier to vent the nearer the peripheral parts of the pores of the porous parts and the ions of alkali metal are easier to be replenished at the interface between the anodes and the exchange membrane, hence current is easy to flow. Therefore, the voltage drop of the exchange membrane is smaller as the total of the cut lengths of the pores provided to the flat plates is larger. Particularly if the total cut end length is kept at about ≥3m/dm2, the voltage drop is smaller than the case when expanded metal anodes are used.
