Abstract

PURPOSE:To make the decrease in electrolytic voltage possible by disposing a cation exchange membrane formed with gas and liquid permeable porous layers having no electrode activity between an anode and a cathode and performing electrolysis while pressurizing an anolyte and a catholyte. CONSTITUTION:The inside of an electrolytic cell is segmented by a cation exchange membrane formed with a gas and liquid permeable porous layer having no electrode activity on at least one surface, whereby an anode chamber and a cathode chamber are provided. Here, an aq. alkali chloride soln. is introduced into the anode chamber, and an aq. caustic alkali soln. into the cathode chamber, and electrolysis is effected by pressurizing an anolyte and a catholyte under <=15kg/cm<2>. Although there is no need for maintaining always the same pressure in the anode and cathode chambers, the pressure difference thereof is kept at <=5kg/cm<2>.
