Abstract
PURPOSE: To reduce electrolysis voltage allowing a high-current efficiency to be maintained in alkali electrolysis of ion exchange membrane method, by roughening the surface of an outermost layer of low water content within a homogenous ion exchange membrane of a multilayer structure.
CONSTITUTION: When a cation exchange membrane of a multilayer structure comprising two or more layers which are different in equivalent weight (the weight of dry resin containing one equivalent of ion exchange group) and/or the kind of ion exchange groups is used in alkali electrolysis of ion exchange membrane method, the surface of at least one layer of low water content of both the outermost layers within the ion exchange membrane is treated to become a rough surface, and thereafter, said membrane is incorporated into an electrolytic cell so that the rough surface provides a cathodic side, thereby the electrolysis voltage being reduced. Herein, as an cation exchange membrane, a fluorine-containing one is preferable for it can prevent anodic liquid or cathodic liquid from passing through the membrane owing to water pressure flow. As a rough surface, one is which 20 or more convexes and concaves per mm having a maximum height of 0.05μ or more or maximum depth of 0.05μ or more are present is preferable, and the rough surface is produced by hot press, dry blast, liquid honing and glow discharge methods, and so on.
