Description

発明の詳細な説明
本発明は、空気電極、酸素放出電極、及び、蓄電池の充電段階及び放電段階中の空気電極を保護する自動装置を備えた、再充電可能な金属空気蓄電池に関する。本発明は、また、このような蓄電池を用いた電気エネルギーの蓄積及び放出方法に関する。
金属空気電池は、金属ベースの陰極を用いており、亜鉛、鉄又はリチウムのような金属と空気電極とが連結されている。このような電池を放電するとき、陽極において酸素分子が減少し、陰極において金属が酸化される。

例として、聴覚人工器官として使用する亜鉛空気電池が、市場に流通している。
空気電池を発展及び最適化するための多くの研究が、この数十年間行なわれている。このような空気電池により、金属空気電気化学発電機を製造することが可能である。このような発電機は、数百Wh/kgに達し得、エネルギー密度が高いことが知られている。
空気電極は、電気化学的還元の酸化剤として、空気中の酸素を用いることができるという利点を有しており、空気は、量的に無限であり、どこでもかついつでも利用可能である。しかしながら、空気中の酸素濃度は低い(0.03mol/L)ので、大きな反応表面領域が必要である。空気電極の多孔質固体構造は、この大きな反応表面領域を提供する。空気電極は、通常アルカリ水溶液である電解液に接触する多孔質固体構造である。空気電極と電解液との間の接点は、「三重接触」接点と呼ばれ、電極の活性剤、気体状の酸化剤及び電解液が同時に存在する。
亜鉛蓄電池において使用可能な空気電極の種々の型の説明のために、読者は、例えば、V. Neburchilovらの論文“A review on air cathodes for zinc-air fuel cells”, Journal of Power Sources 195(2010), P1271-1291を参照してもよい。
しかしながら、空気電極は、蓄電池の放電に用いられるときに、非常に壊れやすいという、重大な欠点を有している。特に、空気電極は多孔質構造を有しており、気体状の酸化剤と、電解液と、固体状の活性剤との間の接点(三重接触)において、電極の全容積の電気化学反応が起こる容積電極として動作する。充電段階においては、気体状の酸素分子が、空気電極の構造内に形成される。この気体状の酸素が、炭素粒子と使用した結合ポリマーとの間の結合を破壊することによって、空気電極の多孔質構造の機械的破壊を急速にもたらす。
さらに、酸素存在下における、炭素の酸化を介した炭素の侵食もまた、高電力において促進される。(論文 Kim J., Lee J. Tak Y., “Relationship between carbon corrosion and positive electrode potential in a proton-exchange membrane fuel-cell during start/stop operation” (2009), Journal of Power Sources, 192 (2), pages 674-678、及び、the chapter “Carbons” by Kinishita, K. (2007), in the Handbook of Battery Materials (ed. J.O. Besenhard), Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH, Weinheim, Germanyを参照)。
本発明者らも、空気電極に組み込まれた酸素還元触媒が、炭素粒子の表面において、逆酸化反応に必要な高電力では安定ではないことを観察している。何人かの著者は、2つの電気的に連結された層により構成された、二重機能性電極において、酸素放出触媒に連結する、より耐久性のある酸素還元触媒を用いている(米国5,306,579を参照)。しかしながら、この構成では、電極は短寿命で、繰り返し使用回数が限定される。
蓄電池の放電段階中の空気電極の損傷の問題に対する他の公知の解決方法として、例えば、酸素分子形成のための損傷が生じない第2の陽極である、酸素放出電極を用いる方法がある。
米国特許3,532,548には、陰極、空気電極及び酸素放出電極(補助電極と呼ばれる)を含む再充電可能な、そのような蓄電池が記載されている。この文献に記載された蓄電池を充電するとき、陰極及び酸素放出電極(補助電極)のみが接続される。蓄電池を放電するとき、以下の2つの操作モードが用いられる。
−第1の「標準」操作モードでは、空気電極のみを陰極と操作する。
−第2の「高出力」操作モードでは、2つの陽極(空気電極及び補助電極)を連結して操作する。
それにもかかわらず、本出願人は、米国3,532,548に記載されたシステムが、空気電極を効果的に保護しないことを観察した。特に、放電開始時に2つの蓄電端子間の電圧が高すぎる場合、空気電極に電気化学的損傷が起こり得る。
本出願人の理解によれば、放電開始時のこの損傷はこれまで検出されておらず、米国3,532,548のいずれのケースにおいても考慮されていない。
本発明の目的は、蓄電池の充電段階中のみならず、放電段階中においても、金属空気蓄電池の多孔質空気電極の効果的な保護を確実に行うことである。
この目的は、特に放電開始時に、2つの蓄電端子間の電位を常に監視し、かつ、空気電極の機械的又は化学的損傷のいずれの危険性も取り除くのに十分な程度にこの電位が低いときにのみ空気電極に接続する、自動保護システムの効力により、本発明において達成される。
したがって、本発明の1つの主題は、1以上の金属空気電池と、制御手段と、切換手段とを含む再充電可能な蓄電池であり、
各電池は、
−第1端子及び第2端子、
−第1端子に接続する、金属空気電池のための金属陰極、
−第1酸素放出陽極、
−少なくとも1つの酸素還元触媒を含む多孔質空気電極である第2陽極、並びに、
−電解質を含み、
制御手段は、第2端子と第1端子との間の測定電圧(Vm)と設定電圧(Vc)とを継続的に比較し、かつ、測定電圧(Vm)が設定電圧(Vc)以下に低下したとき、切換手段に切換信号を送信するように適応されており、
切換手段は、制御手段からの切換信号を受け取り、かつ、空気電極と第2端子との間を接続及び切断するように適応されている。
本発明に係る蓄電池は、それゆえに、この各電池に、以下の3つの型の電極を含む:
−例えば、充電段階及び放電段階中に、不変的に第1端子に接続される陰極;
−一実施形態においては第2端子に連続的に接続される、又は、他の実施形態においては、例えば、第2陽極が第2端子に接続されているとき、第2端子から切断されるように、第2陽極と交互に第2端子に接続される、第1陽極;並びに、
−いずれの損傷からも保護されなければならず、かつ、第2放電段階中に両端子間の電位が十分に低い場合にのみ、第2端子に接続される空気電極(第2陽極)。
本発明は、また、1以上のこれらの電極が、複数の複製品として、又は、複数の部分として存在する変形形態も、発明の範疇に含める。例として、単一の平板状陰極、陰極のいずれかの側に位置する2つの空気電極、並びに、平板状陰極と両方の空気電極との間に位置する2つの金属陽極(酸素放出電極)を有する電池について、言及することができる。
陰極は、原則として、金属空気電池において広く使用されているいずれかの金属電極であってもよい。この例として、鉄、リチウム又は亜鉛電極が挙げられ、好ましくはリチウム電極(Li/LiOH)又は亜鉛電極(Zn/Zn(OH) 2−)であり、より好ましくは亜鉛電極である。
第1酸素放出陽極は、例えば、銀電極(Ag/AgO)又はニッケル電極(Ni/NiO若しくはNiOH/NiOOH)であってもよい。電気化学電池において、この電極は、好ましくはニッケル電極であり、典型的には格子構造又は有孔平板構造を有しており、かつ、一般に、陰極と空気電極との間に配置する。この電極の有孔構造は、放電中における電解液の構成要素の陰極と空気電極との間の自由な通行を確保する役割を果たすことが知られている。
第2陽極は、電解質、気体状の酸化剤及び電極の固体状の活性剤との間において三重接続が可能なように設計された、多孔質空気電極である。第2電極は、原則的には、当該技術分野において通常用いられている全てのものの中から選択されてもよく、特に、上述したNeburchilovによる論文に記載されたものの中から選択されてもよい。
第2電極は、好ましくは、Cabotにより販売された製品Vulcan(登録商標) XC72のように、炭素粒子により構成される炭素粉末の集合体により得られた、高い表面領域を有する電極である。空気電極への組み込み前に、COのような気体と反応させることによって、炭素の特定の表面領域を増加させてもよい。炭素粒子の特定の高い表面領域は、重要である。実際に、炭素粒子の表面領域が高いほど、電極の幾何学的表面領域のユニット毎の電流密度も高くなる。多孔質電極は、Dupontにより販売されているFEPのように、好ましくは疎水性フルオロポリマーであるバインダーを用いて、炭素粒子を凝集することによって製造する。例えば、出願WO2000/036677には、金属空気蓄電池としての空気電極の詳細な説明がある。
さらに、炭素粒子ベースの空気電極は、好ましくは、少なくとも1つの酸素還元触媒を含む。この酸素還元触媒は、好ましくは、酸化マンガン及び酸化コバルトにより形成される群から選択される。これらの触媒は、非常に効果的であるが、これらがあまりにも高い電位の対象になったときに不活性化される。したがって、以下でより詳細に記載する、制御手段及び切換手段の組み合わせにより形成された、本発明に係る自動保護装置は、これらの酸素還元触媒を使用する場合に、特に重要である。
使用する電解質は、好ましくは、電池中の全ての電極に接するアルカリ電解液である。ある実施形態において、例えば、リチウム電極を陰極として用いる場合、公知のように、リチウムイオン導電固形電解質を有する陰極から電解液を物理的に分離する必要があり得る。
本発明において使用する制御手段は、第2端子と第1端子との間の測定電圧(Vm)と設定電圧(Vc)とを継続して比較するように適応されていなければならない。この設定電圧は、例えば、電池又は外部電池により作動する固定電位源により提供される基準電圧である。設定電圧は、好ましくは、空気電極のみが接続されている場合における、充電状態の開回路電池の電圧よりもわずかに低い値に設定し、例えば、亜鉛空気電池に対して約1.44Vであり、リチウム空気電池に対して3Vである。
好ましくは、オペアンプにより駆動する電気機械的継電器を、制御手段として用いる。このようなオペアンプは、例えば、LM324としてナショナルセミコンダクターにより販売されており、図2を参照してより詳細に以下で記載する。
本発明の他の主題は、上述したような蓄電池を用いて電気エネルギーを蓄積及び放出する方法である。
この方法は、以下の一連の工程を含む:
(a)陰極を第1端子に接続し、第1陽極を第2端子に接続し、空気電極を切断しれている間の充電段階工程;
(b)陰極を第1端子に接続し、第1陽極を第2端子に接続し、空気電極を切断しており、かつ、両方の端子間における測定電圧(Vm)と設定電圧(Vc)とを継続的に比較している間の第1放電段階工程;
(c)両方の端子間の電圧値が設定電圧(Vc)より下に低下した場合に、空気電極である第2陽極を第2端子に接続している間の第1切換工程;
(d)陰極を第1端子に接続し、空気電極を第2端子に接続している間の第2放電段階工程;並びに、
(e)空気電極を第2端子から切断する間の第2切換工程。
本出願人は、例えば、放電開始時の空気電極の非接続、適切な制御手段による両方の端子間の電圧減少の継続的な監視、その結果端子間の電位差の絶対値が継続的に低い時のみ空気電極を接続、のように、一連の工程(b)及び(c)が、空気電極を効果的に保護し、最新技術に対する本発明の貢献を構築すると判断する。
言い換えれば、放電開始時に、両方の端子間の電圧の絶対値が設定電圧(例えば、Vc=1.44V)の絶対値よりも高い限り、空気電極は切断したままにし、過度に高い電位差による損傷の危険を冒さない。
ニッケルベースの第1陽極(Ni/NiO)を用いる場合、充電開始時の電圧は、典型的には1.7Vと同程度である。
制御手段により継続的に測定される両方の端子間の電圧値が、設定値(1.44V)未満に低下したとき、制御装置は、最終的に空気電極を第2端子に接続する目的で、切換手段に切換信号を送信する。
空気電極は、例えば、次の充電段階が開始するまでのように、放電工程が終了するまで、接続したままにしてもよい。次の充電工程(工程(a))の前の空気電極の切断(工程(e))は、手動で達成してもよく、又は、好ましくは、切換手段と連携する制御手段が、本発明に係る方法の第1切換工程(工程(c))を行うことを通して、自動で達成する。
第2放電段階において、空気電極が第2端子に接続されている間、第1陽極は接続又は切断されてもよい。第1陽極が接続又は切断されるかどうかは、もちろん、切換手段の構造に依存する。本発明の一実施形態において、切換手段は、第2端子から第1陽極を切断するように適応している。他の実施形態において、切換手段は、第2端子から第1陽極を切断しないように適応しており、それゆえに、充電中及び放電中の両方において、第1陽極を継続して第2端子に接続したままにする。

蓄電池の電池は、第1端子1及び第2端子2を含む。蓄電池の放電中、第1端子は負極であり、第2端子は正極である。
第1端子1は第1金属電極3に接続されており、第1金属電極3は、陰極と呼ばれ、例えば亜鉛又はリチウム製である。
第2端子2は、切換手段7を介して、酸素放出電極4又は空気電極5に連結される。蓄電池の放電中、これらの2つの電極は陽極を形成する。
酸素放出電極は、例えば、ニッケル製であり得る。空気電極は、固体/気体界面において酸素還元触媒を含む炭素ベースの多孔質電極である。触媒は酸化マンガン又は酸化コバルトであり得る。
3つの電極3、4、5は、少なくとも1つの電解質、好ましくはアルカリ電解液に接触している。
2つの陽極4、5は、切換手段7を通して第2端子2に連結されている。図1に示す実施形態において、切換手段7は、例えば、端子2を酸素放出電極4又は空気電極5のいずれかに接続する、独占的なものである。
本発明に係る蓄電池はさらに、端子1と2との間の電圧Vmを継続的に測定し、かつ、切換手段7に切換信号を送信するように適応しており、これにより、1つの及び/又は他の陽極の接続又は切断を制御する。
制御手段を図2により詳細に示している。
設定電圧(Vc)と同等の基準電圧を、第1端子1とオペアンプ9の負の入力端子との間に接続された固定電圧源8により供給する。第2端子2を、オペアンプ9の正の入力端子に接続し、両方の入力端子間の電圧差を測定する。それゆえに、設定電圧は、第1端子と第2端子との間の電圧から差し引かれる。両方の端子間で測定された電圧が設定電圧と同等であるとき、オペアンプにより測定された、両方の入力端子に印加された電圧差は0に等しい。
さらに、制御手段は、2つの端子11及び12間のカレントループにおけるスイッチとして作用するトランジスタ10を含む。
蓄電池の両方の端子1及び2間の電圧Vmが設定電圧Vcよりも高いとき、オペアンプは、トランジスタ10のベースBに、与えられた電圧を送る。そして、トランジスタ10が作動し、そのエミッターEとコントローラーCとの間の電流の通過を許容する。
さらに、制御手段はコイル又はインダクター13を含む。カレントループ内に電流が流れるとき、コイルは磁界を発生する。
例えば、切換手段7は、磁界により移動し得る導電素子14を含む継電器を含んでもよい。
それゆえに、コイル13が磁界を発生するとき、導電素子14は第1位置から第2位置に移動する。第1位置において、導電素子が空気電極から分離されることによって、空気電極は蓄電池の第2端子から切断され、第2位置において、空気電極は蓄電池の第2端子に接続される。

Claims (11)

  1. 再充電可能な蓄電池であって、1以上の金属空気電池と、制御手段(6)と、切換手段(7)とを含み、
    上記金属空気電池のそれぞれは、
    −第1端子(1)及び第2端子(2)、
    −上記第1端子(1)に接続され、金属空気電池のための金属陰極(3)、
    −第1酸素放出陽極(4)
    −少なくとも1つの酸素還元触媒を含む多孔質空気電極である、第2陽極(5)、並びに、
    −電解質
    を含み、
    上記制御手段(6)は、上記端子(2)と上記端子(1)との間の測定電圧(Vm)と設定電圧(Vc)とを継続的に比較し、かつ、上記測定電圧(Vm)が上記設定電圧(Vc)未満に低下したとき、上記切換手段(7)に切換信号を送信するように適応されており、
    上記切換手段(7)は、上記制御手段(6)からの切換信号を受け付け、上記第2端子(2)と上記空気電極(5)とを接続する又は切断するように適応されている
    ことを特徴とする蓄電池。
  2. 上記陰極(3)は、リチウム電極(Li/LiOH)又は亜鉛電極(Zn/Zn(OH) 2−)であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の蓄電池。
  3. 上記第1酸素放出陽極(4)は、銀電極(Ag/AgP)又はニッケル電極(Ni/NiO若しくはNiOH/NiOOH)であることを特徴とする請求項2に記載の蓄電池。
  4. 上記空気電極は、炭素粒子及び少なくとも1つの酸素還元触媒をさらに備えていることを特徴とする請求項1〜3のいずれか1項に記載の蓄電池。
  5. 上記空気電極中の上記酸素還元触媒は、酸化マンガン及び酸化コバルトにより形成される群から選択されることを特徴とする請求項1〜4のいずれか1項に記載の蓄電池。
  6. 上記設定電圧(Vc)は、上記空気電極のみが接続されているときの充電段階における、上記金属空気電池の開回路電圧よりも低い値に設定されていることを特徴とする請求項1〜5のいずれか1項に記載の蓄電池。
  7. 上記制御手段(6)は、オペアンプにより駆動される電気機械的継電器であることを特徴とする請求項1〜6のいずれか1項に記載の蓄電池。
  8. 上記第1陽極(4)は、格子形状又は多孔板形状であり、上記陰極と上記空気電極との間に位置することを特徴とする請求項1〜7のいずれか1項に記載の蓄電池。
  9. 請求項1〜8のいずれか1項に記載の蓄電池を用いて電気エネルギーを蓄積及び放出する方法であって、以下の一連の工程を含むことを特徴とする方法:
    (a)上記陰極(3)を上記第1端子(1)に接続し、上記第1陽極(4)を上記第2端子(2)に接続し、上記空気電極(5)を切断する間の充電段階工程;
    (b)上記陰極(3)を上記第1端子(1)に接続し、上記第1陽極(4)を上記第2端子(2)に接続し、上記空気電極(5)を切断し、かつ、上記制御手段(6)が、上記端子(2)と上記端子(1)との間の測定電圧(Vm)と設定電圧(Vc)とを継続的に比較する間の第1放電段階工程;
    (c)上記端子(2)と上記端子(1)との間の電圧値が上記設定電圧(Vc)未満に低下したとき、上記空気電極である上記第2陽極(5)を上記第2端子(2)に接続する間の第1切換工程;
    (d)上記陰極(3)を上記第1端子(1)に接続し、上記空気電極(5)を上記第2端子(2)に接続する間の第2放電段階工程;並びに、
    (e)上記空気電極(5)と上記第2端子(2)とを切断する間の第2切換工程。
  10. 上記第1切換工程において、上記切換手段(7)は、上記第1陽極(4)と上記第2端子(2)とを切断することを特徴とする請求項9に記載の方法。
  11. 上記第1切換工程において、上記切換手段(7)は、上記第1陽極(4)と上記第2端子(2)とを切断しないことを特徴とする請求項9に記載の方法。
