【発明の詳細な説明】

【発明の属する技術分野】本発明は、ソリッドステート
のフラットパネルディスプレイ装置に関し、特に、画素
からの光学的フィードバック情報を用いてディスプレイ
における画素の輝度を最適化するための手段を備えたデ
ィスプレイ装置に関する。 【0002】 【従来の技術】フラットパネルデジタルディスプレイ装
置における使用に関し、ソリッドステート有機発光ダイ
オード(OLEDs)に多大な関心が寄せられている。
これらのディスプレイ装置は、現行の有機材料薄膜(thi
n film of organic material)を流れる電流を用いて発
光している。OLED材料は電磁放射に対しても反応性
を有し、電気回路において適当にバイアスをかければ周
辺光に従属した電流を生成することが可能である。例え
ば、ウェイら(Wei et al.)は特許文献1において、有機
電界発光装置を用いて発光および光の検出の両方を行う
システムを開示している(特許文献1参照。)。 【0003】OLED装置の発光効率はしばしば、有機
材料の不安定性に起因する動作のため著しく低下する。
この不安定は経年変化、使用、温度変化、湿度、また
は、別の環境ストレスの結果生じる。光出力(light out
put)も、処理の変動性に起因して画素毎に変動し得るも
のであり、ディスプレイの均一性の問題が生じている。 【0004】上記問題点の幾つかを克服するため、先行
技術において特定のディスプレイシステムを最適化する
試みがなされている。例えば、ウェッブら(Webb et a
l.)は特許文献2において、人間の入力による、また

レイの較正(calibrate)、または、最適化を行うビデオ

ラストの制御は、大抵CRTおよびLCDディスプレイ

CD材料の平均透過率を測定することで決定されてい

流ソースを流れる電流との比較による、温度誘因性の明
度変動(temperature-induced brightness variation)の
フィードバック補償について開示している。ディスプレ
イ装置からの光出力を測定し、その装置のための較正表
(calibration table)を構成する外部センサを利用して
ディスプレイ装置を較正(calibrate)する方法も知られ
ている。例えば、ボハンら(Bohan et al.)らによる特許
文献5を参照されたい。このアプローチには問題があ
り、それは較正(calibration)の間、ディスプレイが暗
くなり、実時間動作(real time operation)が不可能な
点である。これらのアプローチが有する別の問題には、
フィードバックが画素自体の放射率(emissivity)に直接
的に反応していないこと、または、ディスプレイの画素

発する光に応じてフィードバック電圧信号を生成する光
センサ、および、基板上に形成されフィードバック電圧

レイ10はディスプレイ画素アレー12を有し、これは

ック信号によりディスプレイ入力信号を修正して、ディ
スプレイのアドレス可能画素11の光出力のために補正
が加えられているデータ信号32を形成する。アドレス
制御回路16はデータ信号32に応じて補正されたデー
タ信号22、選択信号24、および、リセット信号26
を生成する。これらはアレー12のアドレス可能画素1

の蓄積を制御するのに用いられる選択信号24と同一で
あってよい。代わりに、選択信号は別の光センサ選択信
号であってもよく、それは点線で示す別の外部光センサ

この信号は増幅器トランジスタ36によって電圧に変換
され、読み出しトランジスタが選択されている限り、線
60上の読み出しトランジスタ40の出力で利用でき
る。もし読み出しトランジスタ40が選択線24で制御
されていれば、読み出し回路からの出力は、リセット信
号26の終了から、選択信号24の終了まで、入手可能
である。もし読み出しトランジスタ40が外部の選択線
39で制御されていれば、出力は外部選択信号がオンで
ある限り、リセット信号26が終了してから光ダイオー
ドが完全に放電するまで入手可能である。出力電圧は、
出力回路15によるリセット信号の終了の後、光ダイオ
ード画像センサに関する従来技術において周知の方法で
測定され、発光体102により出力されている光のレベ

データ信号22、選択信号24、および、リセット信号
26は、2×2のアドレス可能画素11のアレーに接続
された状態で図示されている。出力回路15に接続され
ている読み出し線60は、アレーの各カラムごとに共通

サからの信号を信号処理電子技術によって一体化するこ

はアレーの一部に渡る、色の不均衡を補正するための平

色の画素の1つの画素と結びつけてもよく、または、画

分析的な(a priori)知識と比較される。この知識は、エ

測定、または、過去における類似のディスプレイにおけ
る実験、といった様々なソースから得ることができる。
そしてディスプレイ材料を駆動する電流は、光センサか
らの信号が所望の信号と一致するまで、増加または減少
させられる。一致すれば、発光体の発する光は所望のレ
ベルにある。経時的に発光体がその品質を落とす(degra
de)に従って、発光体は非効率的になり、発する光が弱
くなり、その結果、光電流が減少する。その減衰した光
出力を補償するための駆動電流の増加が起こる。 【0020】周辺光も、放射層(emissive layer)、基

況における補正は可能である。周辺光とディスプレイ光
とを識別するための、最も簡便な機構は先ず周辺光によ
る電流を計測することである。これは、単に発光画素に
ゼロ電流を与え、画素が発光しないようにする。光検出
器からのあらゆる残留信号は、周辺の放射(ambient rad
iation)に起因するもので、あらゆる参照比較はこの残
留信号を調節する。この参照調節(reference adjustmen
t)はディスプレイ装置に電源が入れられたときに、また
は、使用中定期的に行われる。 【0021】参照調節は周辺環境の変化を自動的に補償
するように用いることが可能である。暗い環境(僅かな
周辺放射)で眺めるのであれば、明るい環境(より多く
の周辺放射)にて眺めるときほどの明るさを、ディスプ
レイ装置は必要としない。ディスプレイ装置が定期的に
光出力を再較正(re-calibrate)されるのならば、周辺光
が変化しても周辺光とディスプレイ光との差異は固定的
に維持される。次に、これにより暗い環境における不要
なディスプレイの明るさを低減させることによってディ
スプレイ装置の寿命を延ばすことができ、また、明るい
環境におけるディスプレイ装置の視認性を高めることが
可能である。明度補正が画素のアドレスに基づいて行わ
れるのであれば、ディスプレイの異なる部分を異なる方
法で補正することも可能となり、例えば部分的に影にな
っている装置を補正することが可能である。 【0022】本フィードバック回路は、ディスプレイ装
置と同一の基板にまとめられている。一般に、回路をデ
ィスプレイ装置と直接的に統合することで、高い性能お
よび高い精度を実現することができる。 【0023】ある実施形態においては、発光体102は
有機発光ダイオードである。光ダイオード34は、例え
ば結晶シリコン、ポリシリコン、または、非晶質シリコ
ンのような半導体材料から製造可能であり、堆積(depos
ition)および処理は発光体102と互換性がある。他の
あらゆる互換性のある光センサ材料も使用することがで

可能である。OLED材料の多くの組み合わせおよび変
形例は当該技術分野の知識を有するものには明白なこと
であり、このような装置の製造に利用可能であり、それ
らは本発明の範囲に属する。 【0025】 【発明の効果】本発明は高度に統合された、ディスプレ
イの発光性画素のアレーの光学的フィードバックを得る

における画素の輝度を最適化するための手段を備えたデ
ィスプレイ装置に関する。 【0002】 【従来の技術】フラットパネルデジタルディスプレイ装
置における使用に関し、ソリッドステート有機発光ダイ
オード(OLEDs)に多大な関心が寄せられている。
これらのディスプレイ装置は、現行の有機材料薄膜(thi
n film of organic material)を流れる電流を用いて発
光している。OLED材料は電磁放射に対しても反応性
を有し、電気回路において適当にバイアスをかければ周
辺光に従属した電流を生成することが可能である。例え
ば、ウェイら(Wei et al.)は特許文献1において、有機
電界発光装置を用いて発光および光の検出の両方を行う
システムを開示している(特許文献1参照。)。 【0003】OLED装置の発光効率はしばしば、有機
材料の不安定性に起因する動作のため著しく低下する。
この不安定は経年変化、使用、温度変化、湿度、また
は、別の環境ストレスの結果生じる。光出力(light out
put)も、処理の変動性に起因して画素毎に変動し得るも
のであり、ディスプレイの均一性の問題が生じている。 【0004】上記問題点の幾つかを克服するため、先行
技術において特定のディスプレイシステムを最適化する
試みがなされている。例えば、ウェッブら(Webb et a
l.)は特許文献2において、人間の入力による、また
は、自動化されたコンピュータ制御の下での、ディスプ
レイの較正(calibrate)、または、最適化を行うビデオ
モニタ内のデジタル制御装置を開示している。 【0005】幾つかのシステムはユーザ制御機構を統合
して、より柔軟な動作(operation)または変動する状況
下での最適な使用を供する。例えば、明度およびコント
ラストの制御は、大抵CRTおよびLCDディスプレイ
装置上で可能である。これらの制御は装置自体からの情
報に基づくことが可能であり、ディスプレイ内の参照画
素を利用している。イートンら(Eaton et al.)による特
許文献3においては、LCD参照素子を備えたフィード
バック構成体(feedback arrangement)を用いてコントラ
ストまたは絶対明度を予め選択された値に維持するため
に、別個の制御を備えた参照画素の利用について開示し
ている。このフィードバック情報は光検出器によってL
CD材料の平均透過率を測定することで決定されてい
る。 【0006】ハンセンら(Hansen et al.)は特許文献4
において、抵抗層(resistive layer)を流れる電流と電
流ソースを流れる電流との比較による、温度誘因性の明
度変動(temperature-induced brightness variation)の
フィードバック補償について開示している。ディスプレ
イ装置からの光出力を測定し、その装置のための較正表
(calibration table)を構成する外部センサを利用して
ディスプレイ装置を較正(calibrate)する方法も知られ
ている。例えば、ボハンら(Bohan et al.)らによる特許
文献5を参照されたい。このアプローチには問題があ
り、それは較正(calibration)の間、ディスプレイが暗
くなり、実時間動作(real time operation)が不可能な
点である。これらのアプローチが有する別の問題には、
フィードバックが画素自体の放射率(emissivity)に直接
的に反応していないこと、または、ディスプレイの画素
の異なるタイプ(例えば、色)の問題に対処していない
ことである。さらには、これらのアプローチは、個々の
画素表示素子間の均一性の変動を補正することには有用

を回避するための光学的フィードバックを供するよう
な、改良が加えられているアドレス可能なディスプレイ
画素のデザインが必要である。 【0009】 【課題を解決するための手段】本発明により、アドレス
可能な画像表示画素を備えた画像ディスプレイを供する
ことで上記必要性は満足される。これは、基板、基板上
に形成された発光体、基板上に形成され発光体の発する
光を検出するために発光体と光学的に結合して発光体の
発する光に応じてフィードバック電圧信号を生成する光
センサ、および、基板上に形成されフィードバック電圧
信号に対応して発光体の光出力を示すフィードバック信
号を供するフィードバック読み出し回路を有し、フィー
ドバック読み出し回路は、トランジスタ増幅器、読み出
し回路をリセットするための手段、および、選択スイッ
チを有している。 【0010】本発明の利点は、不均一性を補正する能
力、および、放射性の(emissive)デジタル画像表示装置
の経年変化を補正する能力である。 【0011】 【発明の実施の形態】図1を参照すれば、画像ディスプ
レイ10はディスプレイ画素アレー12を有し、これは
アドレス可能画素11のアレーを有し、それには以下に
説明する発光体および光センサを備えている。光センサ
は光ダイオードまたは光キャパシタであってよい。光キ
ャパシタの場合、当業者は周知であるが、フィードバッ
ク読み出し回路は、さらに光キャパシタからトランジス
タ増幅器に光電荷(photo charge)を転送するためのトラ
ンスファゲートを有している。アドレス可能画素11に
おける光センサは出力回路15によって読み出され、こ
の回路は従来の光ダイオードまたは光キャパシタ画像セ
ンサアレーにおける出力回路と同様の方式で動作する。
ディスプレイ制御回路14はディスプレイ画素アレー1
2からフィードバック信号30を受け取り、外部ソース
からディスプレイ入力信号13を受け取り、フィードバ
ック信号によりディスプレイ入力信号を修正して、ディ
スプレイのアドレス可能画素11の光出力のために補正
が加えられているデータ信号32を形成する。アドレス
制御回路16はデータ信号32に応じて補正されたデー
タ信号22、選択信号24、および、リセット信号26
を生成する。これらはアレー12のアドレス可能画素1
1を駆動するために用いられる。 【0012】アドレス制御回路16は、アナログ回路、
または、命令およびデータ並びに中央処理ユニットを備
えたコンピュータで実施可能である。アドレス制御回路
16は、データ信号22、選択信号24、および、リセ
ット信号26を用いて、データをアドレス可能画素11
に書き込む。アドレス可能画素内の光センサで生成され
たフィードバック信号30はディスプレイ制御回路14
に渡り、処理されて、その結果のデータ信号32がアド
レス制御回路16に渡される。 【0013】図4は従来技術において周知のアドレス可
能発光画素を示している。アドレス可能画素は、発光ダ
イオードLED102を駆動するための駆動回路を備え
ている。Vdd送電線100は、駆動トランジスタ10
4を通してLED102に電力を供給する。駆動トラン
ジスタ104はキャパシタ106に蓄えられている電荷
の生成する電圧との応答性を有する。従来技術において
周知のように、データ線22および選択線24の信号そ
れぞれと反応して、電荷はトランジスタ108によって
蓄積される。 【0014】図2を参照すれば、本発明の実施形態の1
つにより、アドレス可能画素11は、図4に示す発光体
駆動回路に加え、さらに光センサを有し、それは発光体
102と同一の基板上に配され、光学的に結合してい
る。光ダイオード34は、例えば図示されている光ダイ
オード、または、光キャパシタ(図示せず)でよい。ア
ドレス可能画素11はさらにフィードバック読み出し回
路を同一基板上に有し、それはトランジスタ増幅器3
6、読み出しトランジスタ40、および、リセット信号
26によって駆動されるリセットトランジスタ38を備
えている。トランジスタ増幅器36は光ダイオード34
からの信号を増幅し、フィードバック電圧信号を読み出
しトランジスタ40に供給し、発光体の光出力を示すフ
ィードバック信号を得る。読み出しトランジスタ40は
選択信号に応答するスイッチを構成し、線60上のフィ
ードバック信号を読み出させる。読み出しトランジスタ
40に適用される選択信号はキャパシタ106への電荷
の蓄積を制御するのに用いられる選択信号24と同一で
あってよい。代わりに、選択信号は別の光センサ選択信
号であってもよく、それは点線で示す別の外部光センサ
選択線39に与えられている。 【0015】図2に示す回路のタイミングを図3に示
す。図3を参照すると、データを画素に転送可能である
場合、データ信号22を高く示している。データが利用
可能な時間の間、選択信号24がトランジスタ108に
加えられ、データを表している電荷がキャパシタ106
に蓄積される。キャパシタ106の電荷は瞬時にその新
しい所望のデータ値で安定し、キャパシタ106の電荷
に比例した光が発光体102から出力される。リセット
信号26はリセットトランジスタ38を駆動し、光ダイ
オード34にVddのバイアスを加える。リセット信号
26が除かれると、光ダイオードは、発光した光の強度
に比例して発光体102の光に応答し放電を開始する。
この信号は増幅器トランジスタ36によって電圧に変換
され、読み出しトランジスタが選択されている限り、線
60上の読み出しトランジスタ40の出力で利用でき
る。もし読み出しトランジスタ40が選択線24で制御
されていれば、読み出し回路からの出力は、リセット信
号26の終了から、選択信号24の終了まで、入手可能
である。もし読み出しトランジスタ40が外部の選択線
39で制御されていれば、出力は外部選択信号がオンで
ある限り、リセット信号26が終了してから光ダイオー
ドが完全に放電するまで入手可能である。出力電圧は、
出力回路15によるリセット信号の終了の後、光ダイオ
ード画像センサに関する従来技術において周知の方法で
測定され、発光体102により出力されている光のレベ
ルが決定される。 【0016】図5を参照すると、本発明の実施形態の1
つによる、アドレス可能画素のアレーが示されている。
データ信号22、選択信号24、および、リセット信号
26は、2×2のアドレス可能画素11のアレーに接続
された状態で図示されている。出力回路15に接続され
ている読み出し線60は、アレーの各カラムごとに共通
である。 【0017】活性化された場合には、アドレス可能画素
の発光体102から発せられた光の幾らかが光センサ3
4で直接的に検出される。光センサは、光学的に発光体
と結合しており、発光体からの光を直接的に(光センサ
が発光体に近接して配されており、光学的介在物がない
ような場合)または、反射もしくは1以上の層を透過し
て間接的に吸収される。光センサは、基板上、発光体の
真上もしくは真下(directly above or below the light
emitters)に配されてもよく、または、基板上、発光体
と同一平面内に配されてもよい。 【0018】本発明は、1発光体につき1つの光センサ
に限定するものではない。発光体群を1つの光センサで
感受することが可能で、それによりアレー内の光センサ
の数を減らし、または、アレー内のより広い領域にわた
る光を計測する手段を供して支持ロジックおよび相互接
続(interconnects)を簡素化することができる。光セン
サからの信号を信号処理電子技術によって一体化するこ
とも可能であり、それによって、例えばアレー全体また
はアレーの一部に渡る、色の不均衡を補正するための平
均信号を供することができる。特に、光センサは3つの
色の画素の1つの画素と結びつけてもよく、または、画
素全体と結びつけてもよい。 【0019】光センサ素子から検出されたフィードバッ
ク信号を用いて、ディスプレイ制御回路にて、検出光の
フィードバックを供することができ、それにより画素か
ら出力された光の変化または差異を補正することができ
る。一般的に言えば、生成された信号は、所望の輝度
(参照値(reference))で生成された信号についての非
分析的な(a priori)知識と比較される。この知識は、エ
ミッタの挙動のモデル、典型的なディスプレイにおける
測定、または、過去における類似のディスプレイにおけ
る実験、といった様々なソースから得ることができる。
そしてディスプレイ材料を駆動する電流は、光センサか
らの信号が所望の信号と一致するまで、増加または減少
させられる。一致すれば、発光体の発する光は所望のレ
ベルにある。経時的に発光体がその品質を落とす(degra
de)に従って、発光体は非効率的になり、発する光が弱
くなり、その結果、光電流が減少する。その減衰した光
出力を補償するための駆動電流の増加が起こる。 【0020】周辺光も、放射層(emissive layer)、基
板、または、カバーを透過して光センサに到達するかも
しれない。そして、光学的に結合されている発光体から
の光と周辺光が、光センサによって検出される。この状
況における補正は可能である。周辺光とディスプレイ光
とを識別するための、最も簡便な機構は先ず周辺光によ
る電流を計測することである。これは、単に発光画素に
ゼロ電流を与え、画素が発光しないようにする。光検出
器からのあらゆる残留信号は、周辺の放射(ambient rad
iation)に起因するもので、あらゆる参照比較はこの残
留信号を調節する。この参照調節(reference adjustmen
t)はディスプレイ装置に電源が入れられたときに、また
は、使用中定期的に行われる。 【0021】参照調節は周辺環境の変化を自動的に補償
するように用いることが可能である。暗い環境(僅かな
周辺放射)で眺めるのであれば、明るい環境(より多く
の周辺放射)にて眺めるときほどの明るさを、ディスプ
レイ装置は必要としない。ディスプレイ装置が定期的に
光出力を再較正(re-calibrate)されるのならば、周辺光
が変化しても周辺光とディスプレイ光との差異は固定的
に維持される。次に、これにより暗い環境における不要
なディスプレイの明るさを低減させることによってディ
スプレイ装置の寿命を延ばすことができ、また、明るい
環境におけるディスプレイ装置の視認性を高めることが
可能である。明度補正が画素のアドレスに基づいて行わ
れるのであれば、ディスプレイの異なる部分を異なる方
法で補正することも可能となり、例えば部分的に影にな
っている装置を補正することが可能である。 【0022】本フィードバック回路は、ディスプレイ装
置と同一の基板にまとめられている。一般に、回路をデ
ィスプレイ装置と直接的に統合することで、高い性能お
よび高い精度を実現することができる。 【0023】ある実施形態においては、発光体102は
有機発光ダイオードである。光ダイオード34は、例え
ば結晶シリコン、ポリシリコン、または、非晶質シリコ

- 【特許請求の範囲】 【請求項1】 a)基板、 b)基板上に形成された発光体、 c)基板上に形成され、発光体の発する光に反応してフ
ィードバック電圧信号を生成するために発光体の発する
光を検出するように発光体と光学的に結合している光セ
ンサ、ならびに、 d)基板上に形成され、フィードバック電圧信号に反応
して発光体の光出力を示すフィードバック信号を供し、
トランジスタ増幅器、読み出し回路をリセットする手
段、および選択スイッチを備えた、フィードバック読み
出し回路を有する、アドレス可能画像表示画素。
