(57)【要約】 【課題】 サーバコンピュータからプリンタへの画像デ
ータの送信および受信に必要な時間を短縮することがで
きる画像データ印刷システムを提供する。 【解決手段】 サーバコンピュータ１からプリンタ２に
通信手段を介して送信された画像データは、プリンタ２
のキャッシュメモリに記憶される。キャッシュメモリに
記憶された画像データは印刷を行うごとに、プリンタ２
が認識可能な印刷データに変換され印刷部により印刷が
実行される。したがって、プリンタ２がサーバコンピュ
ータ１から受信するのは画像データであり、画像データ
は印刷データに比較してデータ量が小さいので、データ
の送信および受信に必要な時間を短縮することができ
る。

【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【発明の属する技術分野】本発明は、画像データ印刷シ
ステムおよび画像データ印刷方法に関し、特に記憶装置
に記憶された画像データを通信手段を介して記憶装置と
は遠隔地に設置されているプリンタに転送し印刷する画
像データ印刷システムおよび画像データ印刷方法に関す
る。

【従来の技術】従来より、画像データに基づく画像をプ
リンタなどの印刷装置で印刷する場合、パーソナルコン
ピュータ（以下、パソコン）に備えられているハードデ
ィスクなどの記憶装置に記憶されている画像データをプ
リンタで認識可能な印刷データにパソコンを用いて変換
し、印刷を実行していた。また、デジタルカメラとプリ
ンタを接続し、デジタルカメラの記憶媒体に記憶されて
いる撮影済みの画像データをパソコンを介さずに直接プ
リンタで印刷することも可能になっている。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】デジタルカメラで撮像
した画像データはデジタルカメラに搭載されている記憶
媒体に記憶されていたが、最近ではデジタルカメラで撮
影可能な画像データの枚数を増大させるために、撮影し
た画像データを通信手段を介してサーバコンピュータに
備えられた大容量の記憶装置に転送し記憶する方法が提
案されている。
【０００４】デジタルカメラで撮影した画像データに限
らずサーバコンピュータの記憶装置に記憶されている画
像データを印刷する場合、ユーザはサーバコンピュータ
に通信手段を介して接続されたパソコンを利用してサー
バコンピュータの記憶装置に記憶されている希望の画像
を検索し、通信手段を介して受信した希望の画像の画像
データをパソコンを利用してプリンタが認識可能な印刷
データに変換しながら印刷を行っていた。
【０００５】しかしながら、画像データはサーバコンピ
ュータの記憶装置にしか記憶されていないため、画像を
印刷する場合、印刷を行うごとにサーバコンピュータか
ら画像データを受信する必要があった。また、サーバコ
ンピュータから送信されプリンタが受信する画像データ
は、圧縮された画像データであるため数百キロバイト程
度の画像データであるが、プリンタで印刷するための印
刷データに変換すると印刷する画像のサイズによるが数
メガ〜数十メガバイト程度の大きなデータになる。した
がって、サーバコンピュータで印刷データを作成してプ
リンタに転送するとデータの転送に長時間を要するとい
う問題があった。
【０００６】そこで本発明の目的は、画像データ記憶装
置に記憶されている画像データをパソコンなどの処理装
置を介さずに直接印刷装置で印刷することができる画像
データ印刷システムを提供することにある。
【０００７】また、本発明の別の目的は印刷を行う画像
データを通信するために必要な時間を短縮することがで
きる画像データ印刷システムを提供することにある。

【課題を解決するための手段】本発明の請求項１記載の
画像データ印刷システムおよび請求項３記載の画像デー
タ印刷方法によると、印刷装置に画像データを記憶する
第一記憶部、第二記憶部、印刷データ作成手段とを備え
ているので、パソコンなどの処理装置を介さずに画像デ
ータ記憶装置から直接印刷装置で画像データに基づく画
像を出力することができる。
【０００９】また、同じ画像データに基づく画像を繰り
返し何枚も印刷する場合、印刷する画像の基となる画像
データは第一記憶部に記憶され、印刷装置で印刷データ
が作成されるため、印刷を行うごとに画像データ記憶装
置から画像データを受信する必要がなく、画像データを
通信するために必要な時間を短縮することができる。さ
らに、印刷装置で印刷した画像の基となった画像データ
は、印刷が終了すると印刷装置の第二記憶部に記憶され
るので、一度印刷した画像データは印刷装置に記憶され
ており、同じ画像データに基づく画像を印刷する場合、
再度画像データ記憶装置に接続する必要がない。

ータ印刷システムは、デジタルカメラやスキャナなどの
入力装置３によって入力された画像データを記憶する記
憶装置を有する画像データ記憶装置としてのサーバコン
ピュータ１、サーバコンピュータ１の記憶装置に記憶し
ている画像データに基づく画像を印刷する印刷装置とし
てのプリンタ２、入力装置３およびプリンタ２とサーバ
コンピュータ１を接続し画像データを送信、受信可能な
通信手段から構成されている。
【００１３】サーバコンピュータ１は、画像処理や各種
の制御を実行可能なコンピュータ本体であるＣＰＵ１
０、記憶装置としてのハードディスク１１、入力装置３
やプリンタ２と結ばれる通信経路４に接続するための通
信部１２を備えている。サーバコンピュータ１の記憶装
置としては、プリンタ２との間で高速にデータのやり取
りを行うために大容量、かつ高速アクセスが可能なハー
ドディスクを利用する。サーバコンピュータ１は、例え
ばサーバコンピュータ提供業者によりユーザの自宅とは
遠隔地に設置したり、インターネットなどのネットワー
クを介してプリンタ２と遠隔地に設置したりなどプリン
タ２とは遠隔地に設置されている。
【００１４】プリンタ２はパーソナルコンピュータなど
の処理装置を介さずにサーバコンピュータ１に続されて
おり、ユーザからプリンタ２に直接行われる指示に従っ
てハードディスク１１に記憶された画像データに基づく
画像を印刷することができる。ユーザが個人の場合、プ
リンタ２はユーザの自宅に設置されている。プリンタ２
は、サーバコンピュータ１と結ぶ通信経路４に接続する
ための通信部２１、サーバコンピュータ１から受信した
画像データを一時記憶する第一記憶部としてのキャッシ
ュメモリ２２、印刷を行う印刷部２３、印刷を終了した
画像データを記憶可能な第二記憶部としてのローカルデ
ィスク２４、プリンタ２の機能の制御および画像データ
を印刷データへ変換する変換手段としてのＣＰＵ２０を
備えている。
【００１５】ローカルディスク２４は、画像データを記
憶可能なプリンタ２に内蔵または外付けされている記憶
媒体であり、ハードディスクやフロッピィディスクなど
のディスクドライブ装置またはフラッシュメモリなど、
随時データの読み書きが可能な記憶媒体であれば利用す
ることができる。通信手段は、サーバコンピュータ１に
設けられる通信部１２と、プリンタ２に設けられる通信
部２１と、通信部１２、２１を相互に接続する通信経路
４から構成されている。通信経路４としては、例えば電
話回線、ＳＣＳＩ（Small Computer System Interfac
e）方式またはＵＳＢ（Universal Serial Bus）方式な
どを利用した有線転送方式、携帯電話回線や赤外線など
を利用した無線転送方式などを利用することができる。
また、インターネットなどのネットワークを利用するこ
とも可能である。
【００１６】次に、サーバコンピュータ１のハードディ
スク１１に記憶されている画像データに基づく画像をプ
リンタ２で印刷する手順について説明する。ステップＳ
３０１では、ユーザから入力装置３またはプリンタ２に
行われる指示によって、プリンタ２が通信手段を介して
サーバコンピュータ１のハードディスク１１に記憶され
ている画像データを受信する。例えば入力装置３がデジ
タルカメラの場合、デジタルカメラに設けられた指示部
からユーザが希望する画像の印刷実行を指示すると、サ
ーバコンピュータ１に印刷実行の指示が送信され、サー
バコンピュータ１はハードディスク１１に記憶されてい
る画像データをプリンタ２に送信する。

した画像データをキャッシュメモリ２２に記憶する。キ
ャッシュメモリ２２はＲＡＭ（Random Access Memory）
である。したがって、受信した画像データを迅速に記憶
することができるので、画像データの受信に必要な時間
を短縮することができる。
【００１８】ステップＳ３０３では、キャッシュメモリ
２２に記憶されている画像データに基づいて印刷データ
を作成しながら印刷を実行する。印刷データは、プリン
タ２のＣＰＵ２０によって作成されるプリンタ２が印刷
を行うために必要なデータである。例えば、ＣＣＤの画
素数が１００万程度のデジタルカメラで撮影したカラー
画像を６色のインクを利用するカラーインクジェットプ
リンタを利用して印刷する場合、画像データがＪＰＥＧ
ファイルなどにより圧縮された数百キロバイト程度のデ
ータであっても、プリンタ２で印刷するためにＢ（Blac
k）、Ｃ（Cyan）、Ｍ（Magenta）、Ｙ（Yellow）、ｃ
（薄いCyan）、ｍ（薄いMagenta）の６色それぞれに対
して印刷データを作成し補間や色調の調節を行った印刷
データは画像のサイズにもよるが数メガ〜数十メガバイ
ト程度の大きなデータになる。ここで、一旦印刷した画
像データはプリンタのローカルディスクに記憶し保存さ
れるので、印刷の実行毎にサーバコンピュータ１から画
像データを受信する必要はない。
【００１９】また、同一の画像データに基づく画像を繰
り返し印刷する場合、１回の印刷を行うごとにキャッシ
ュメモリ２２に記憶されている画像データに基づいて印
刷データが作成される。したがって、サーバコンピュー
タ１で印刷データを作成してからプリンタ２に送信する
よりも通信時間を短縮することができる。また、印刷デ
ータを作成しながら印刷を実行することで、データの大
きな印刷データをキャッシュメモリ２２に常駐させる必
要がないので、印刷の処理および実行を迅速に行うこと
ができる。
【００２０】ステップＳ３０４では、印刷が終了した画
像データをプリンタ２に備えられているローカルディス
ク２４に記憶し保存する。したがって、一度サーバコン
ピュータ１から受信しプリンタ２で印刷を行った画像デ
ータはプリンタ２のローカルディスク２４に記憶し保存
されているので、以前印刷した画像を再印刷、いわゆる
焼き増しをする場合、サーバコンピュータ１から再び画
像データを受信する必要がなく、操作性を向上すること
ができる。
【００２１】また、このとき、印刷部２３で印刷が完了
した画像データにはローカルディスク２４から削除され
るのを防止するために、その画像データのヘッダ部分に
削除防止データが付与される。すなわち、印刷が完了し
た画像データのヘッダ部分には削除防止データが付与さ
れた後、ローカルディスク２４に記憶し保存される。
【００２２】以上、入力装置としてデジタルカメラを利
用する場合について説明したが、スキャナやデジタルビ
デオカメラなど画像データを入力可能な入力装置、およ
びテキストデータを入力可能な入力装置など入力装置で
あればデジタルカメラに限るものではない。また、サー
バコンピュータの記憶装置としてハードディスクを利用
しているが、磁気ディスクや光ディスクなど大容量、高
速アクセス可能な記憶装置であれば利用することができ
る。
【００２３】以上、実施例によって説明したように、本
発明の画像データ印刷システムおよび画像データ印刷方
法によると、一度印刷した画像データは印刷装置の記憶
部に記憶し保存されるので、印刷を実行するたびに画像
データ記憶装置から画像データまたは印刷データを印刷
装置で受信する必要がない。また、印刷を実行するごと
に画像データから印刷データを作成するので、印刷デー
タを画像データ記憶装置で作成してから送信するよりも

Claims (5)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 画像データを記憶している画像データ記
    憶装置と、 前記画像データ記憶装置に記憶されている画像データを
    取得して記憶可能な第一記憶部、印刷の実行が指示され
    るごとに前記第一記憶部に記憶された画像データを印刷
    データに変換する印刷データ作成手段、前記印刷データ
    に基づく画像を印刷可能な印刷部、ならびに前記第一記
    憶部に記憶されている画像データを前記印刷部で印刷が
    終了した後に記憶し蓄積する第二記憶部を有する印刷装
    置と、 前記画像データ記憶装置および前記印刷装置それぞれに
    設けられ、画像データを送信および受信する通信部と、
    前記通信部を接続する通信経路とを有する通信手段と、 を備えることを特徴とする画像データ印刷システム。
  2. 【請求項２】 前記画像データ記憶装置は、前記印刷装
    置と遠隔に配置されることを特徴とする請求項１記載の
    画像データ印刷システム。
  3. 【請求項３】 画像データ記憶装置に記憶されている画
    像データを印刷装置で印刷する画像データ印刷方法であ
    って、 前記画像データ記憶装置から通信手段を介して前記印刷
    装置に画像データを送信する段階と、 前記印刷装置が受信した画像データを前記印刷装置の第
    一記憶部に記憶する段階と、 前記第一記憶部に記憶された画像データを前記印刷装置
    の印刷部で印刷可能な印刷データに変換する段階と、 前記印刷データに基づいて前記印刷部で印刷を行う段階
    と、 前記第一記憶部に記憶されている画像データを前記印刷
    装置の第二記憶部に記憶する段階と、 を含むことを特徴とする画像データ印刷方法。
  4. 【請求項４】 前記画像データ記憶装置は、前記印刷装
    置と遠隔に配置されることを特徴とする請求項３記載の
    画像データ印刷方法。
  5. 【請求項５】 外部の画像データ記憶装置に記憶されて
    いる画像データを記憶可能な第一記憶部と、 印刷の実行が指示されるごとに前記第一記憶部に記憶さ
    れた画像データを印刷データに変換する印刷データ作成
    手段と、 前記印刷データに基づく画像を印刷可能な印刷部と、 前記第一記憶部に記憶されている画像データを前記印刷
    部で印刷が終了した後に記憶し蓄積する第二記憶部と、 を備えることを特徴とする印刷装置。
