Abstract

993,969. Fluorescent discharge lamps; thermionic cathode tubes. NIPPON TELEGRAPH & TELEPHONE PUBLIC CORPORATION. June 2, 1961 [June 15, 1960], No. 20068/61. Heading H1D. An electrical discharge tube, e.g. a fluorescent discharge lamp or a discharge tube used in telephone circuits, is provided with a mesh grid at a floating potential and movable to be located in the vicinity of the boundary between the space charge region and the plasma region formed when there is a potential difference across the tube, in order to reduce flickers and noises. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the discharge tube 6 includes a cathode 7, anode 8, and mesh grids 9 fitted with nickel sliding tubes 10 movable by a magnet. The curvatures of the anode 8 and grids 9 are made to conform to the potential distribution at their locations within the tube which can be calculated or found by experiment. The grids can be of metal or an insulator and can be of different pitch and size. The grids may totally or partially enclose the electrodes. The discharge tube can contain helium at up to 4 mms. pressure.
