Abstract

976,471. Drying webs. SVENSKA FLAKTFABRIKEN A.B. Feb. 5, 1962 [Feb. 4, 1961], No. 4397/62. Heading F4G. A mixture of hot air and water vapour in a duct 24 is transferred to a distribution chamber 14 by a blower 15 and the mixture then passes to a pressure chamber 12 via a tube 20. The mixture escapes from the pressure chamber 12 via a plurality of openings 22 to dry a paper carried by a heated cylinder 1. A major portion of the mixture together with some fresh air is then circulated back to the blower 15 via tubes 23, extending through the pressure chamber 12, and via a suction chamber 13 leading to the blower 15. The tubes 23 have a total cross-sectional area of at least three times the total area of the openings 22, and the openings 22 have an "hydraulic diameter " less than half the distance between the cylinder 1 and the openings 22. The " hydraulic diameter " is defined as 4 (the cross-sectional area of the opening) ¸ (the perimeter of the opening). The apparatus may include a plurality of blowers 15 extending along its length, each blower supplying a plurality of tubes 20. The pressure chamber 12 is divided into a plurality of sections, there being one section for each tube 20.
