Abstract

922,296. Drying webs. STATTWELL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Jan. 24, 1962 [Feb. 16, 1961], No. 5777/61. Class 34 (1). A web-drying apparatus comprises a closed drying chamber housing a rotatable hollow perforated roller and having web feed and discharge slots respectively in opposite walls of the chamber positioned so as to guide the web around not more than 180 degrees of the periphery of the roller, a heater mounted exteriorly of the roller within the chamber to direct dry heat on the uncovered portion of the periphery of the roller, and air inlet and outlet openings in the chamber being so directed that incoming air is directed through and around to the air outlet opening. A web 9 is dried by passage about a portion of a perforated roller 4, which roller is heated on that part of its external surface not covered by the web by a heat source, e.g. an elongated gas burner 5 parallel to the axis of the roller. The web is fed to and discharged from the chamber through openings 7, 8 in the top and bottom of the chamber respectively, and air inlet and outlet openings 2, 3 are provided at the ends of the chamber. The air issuing from the outlet 3 may be led to a heat exchanger to preheat fresh air entering the inlet 2. In a modification a plurality of chambers may be utilized, each having a roller 4 and heater 5.
