Abstract

895,655. Drying printed webs. HALLEY & SONS Ltd., JAMES, and HALLEY, A. M. Feb. 3, 1960 [Nov. 4, 1958], No. 35301/58. Class 34(1) A moving web 6 of printed material is dried by air jets issuing from spaced longitudinal slots in electrically-heated tubes 7 enclosed by a hood 14. The hood comprises a central L-shaped duct 17 having an air inlet 13 and communicating with end manifolds 12 between which extend the open-ended tubes 7, a duct 20 having slots 22 through which cooling air is directed on to the dried web, and an air outlet 15 connected to an exhaust fan. Unheated air is directed on to the web as it enters the drying apparatus through slots 19 in the duct 17 to promote vaporization of solvent from printing ink. The tubes are constructed as described in Specification 851,367.
