Abstract
1,207,227. Drying webs or sheets. BECHTEL INTERNATIONAL CORP. 9 Oct., 1968 [10 Oct., 1967], No. 47930/68. Heading F4G. [Also in Division H5] A method of drying a web or sheet comprises applying thereto microwave energy and high speed (i.e. at least 10,000<SP>1</SP>/min.) jets of gas (e.g. air, nitrogen or superheated steam) which carry off moisture liberated by the microwave energy. Gas is passed through the conductor(s) emitting microwave energy to prevent condensation of moisture therein. In the embodiment shown, web 10 is subjected to microwave energy as it passes through sections of a meandering wave-guide 40 and to high speed gas jets from nozzle openings 62, which gas removes moisture from the boundary of the web. Pressurized heated gas is supplied by a fan to openings 62 via inlet plenums 16 and the moisture-carrying gas is exhaustedthrough outlet plenums 20 to a suction fan for re-circulation to the pressure fan. To prevent moisture condensation in the waveguide 40 gas is passed in through openings 68. The inlet end of one half of the waveguide 40 is connected via a line 38 to a microwave generator, and the outlet end has a dummy load e.g. a water-filled tube 50. The inlet and outlet ends of the other half of the waveguide are provided with adjustable impedance matching stubs 44, 52. In another embodiment (Fig. 9, not shown) in which the web is irradiated from one side only, the waveguide (90) is provided therein with strips or fingers (92). There may be more than one microwave and gas applying unit positioned across and along the path of the web.
