Abstract

1,221,540. Microwave drying apparatus. BECHTEL INTERNATIONAL CORP. 24 Oct., 1968 [25 Oct., 1967], No. 50560/68. Heading F4G. [Also in Division H5] An apparatus for microwave drying of a web comprises a split waveguide having a portion on each side of the web being passed through the apparatus and a row of gas jets on each side of the web so that the web is subjected successively to radiation and to jets of gas which impinge on both sides of the web to suspend it between the waveguide portions, the faces of the waveguide portions between which the web passes being covered with a low loss factor material. The apparatus may comprise a split meandering waveguide 40, high speed gas jets 62 imping- ing gas on both sides of the web 10 to suspend it between the portions of the waveguide and a plate 55 of low loss factor material covering the faces of the waveguide portions between which the web passes. The plates 55 have openings 57 in alignment with jets 62. Pressurized heated gas is supplied by a pressure fan to the jets 62 via inlet plenums 16 and the gas is exhausted by a suction fan via outlet plenums 20. The exhausted gas may be recirculated. The waveguide portions and plates 55 may have holes 68, 59 respectively through which gas is passed to impinge on the web. Each portion of the waveguide may be filled with a plastics foam material and holes for the passage of air may be provided in the foam material. Non- conducting strips 61 prevent the web being caught in the plenums 20. The inlet end of one waveguide portion is connected via line 38 to a microwave generator and the outlet end has a dummy load, e.g. water-filled tube 50. The inlet and outlet ends of the other waveguide portion are provided with adjustable impedance stubs 44, 52.
