Abstract

852,655. Drying moulded articles. SPOONER DRYER & ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Feb. 18, 1959 [Feb. 19, 1958], No. 5349/58. Class 34(2) Light-weight articles 12, Fig. 1, of moulded pulp &c. are dried on a perforate conveyer 11, the upper run of which passes through the space between hot air or gas chambers 13 having transverse nozzles 14 for directing the air on to the articles and suction chambers 23. The consequent pressure drop across the conveyer is sufficient to hold the articles in position on the ccnveyer. The air in the drying chamber is circulated by fan 15 driven by electric motors 16, the air passing through ducts 17, 18, Fig. 4, into the chambers 13 and after discharge from the nozzles returning in part from the space above the upper run of the conveyer to the fan for recirculation. A slight vacuum is maintained in the chambers 23 by fans 26, Fig. 2, which return the air through pipes 27 to the fan inlets 19. The air is heated by burners 22. Alternatively, the air may be heated in heat exchangers heated by steam or by electric heaters. In a modification, the articles travel from one end of the apparatus to the opposite end and back again whilst held on the conveyer 36, Fig. 3, by the air issuing from the nozzles 14 and 42 of chambers 13 and 41 disposed respectively above and beneath the conveyer and the vacuum produced in the chambers 23 disposed between the upper and lower runs of the conveyer.
