Class 34(2) In a heating unit 16, Fig. 1, forming part of the drying apparatus shown in Fig. 3, articles 12 are subjected to a circulating stream of hot air whilst conveyed through a chamber 11. Vanes 17a, 17b, 17c, in chambers 14, 15, alongside and in communication with the chamber 11 divides the air stream into sub-streams which are driven and heated by a fan 25 and a gas, oil or electric heater 26, respectively. A damper - controlled gas outlet 34, Fig. 3, is associated with the chamber 15. In the drying apparatus two units 16 are joined in operative sequence to a cooling chamber 51, Fig. 3, into which cooling air enters through a vertical duct 48 having at its foot suitable curved guiding vanes 50. The air is induced by a fan 45 to cross the chamber and pass through a chamber 44 - similar to 14-prior to re-crossing the chamber 51 to an outlet duct 49 similar to duct 48. The fans 25 have a common drive and the air streams in either unit 16 may be diverted for circulation in the other unit by using a damper 58. Curved vertical plates 53, Fig. 6, and a horizontal deflector 52 are provided at the air inlet ports 24 associated with the chambers 11, 51, to guide the issuing air into and around the articles being dried and cooled. In a modified apparatus, the chambers 14, 11, 15, Fig. 7, and 51, 44, are superposed, the spent gases passing to a vertical damper-controlled duct 54 through dampers 55 whilst gas circulating between the units 16 is controlled by a damper 57.
