Abstract

564,356. Drying and conditioning paper. HALL & KAY, Ltd., KAY, H., and HALL, S. Dec. 19, 1942, Nos. 18077/42 and 821/44. [Class 96] Paper leaving the press rolls 7 of a paper-making machine is heated by moist air to drive moisture from the interior of the paper to the surface without allowing the surface to dry. The web 8 is carried by a felt 10 through a chamber 9 supplied by a fan 13 with moist air which is drawn from the felt dryers 12 and from the chamber 9, and is heated at 17. Provison may be made at 27 for exhausting part of the moist air and at 29 for intake of fresh air. Part of the 'air leaving the heater, 17 is returned to the felt dryers 12. From the heating chamber 9, the paper passes about upper and lower guide rollers 23, 40 and 22, 39 such that each vertical run of the paper passes between two casings 24 as disclosed in Specification 461,342 and for supplying heated air to the lower part of each run and withdrawing air from the upper. The dried paper may be conditioned by air from similar casings 50 as it passes between further upper and lower guide rollers 49, 48, the paper then being passed between tension rollers 56 and reeled at 57. In a modification, the web after preliminary heating passes also about a series of dryer drums.
