971,830. Carding engines; cleaning machines. DEUTSCHER SPINNEREIMASCHINENBAU INGLOSTADT NIEDERLASSUNG DER SCHUBERT & SALZER MASCHINENFABRIK A.G. Oct. 26, 1962 [Nov. 24, 1961], No. 40549/62. Headings D1F and D1N. A carding engine has covers over worker rollers and slits in the covers through which air carrying dust and fly is exhausted. In an embodiment in which a licker-in 3<SP>1</SP> is followed by workers 3 and doffer 4, a cover 9 associated with cuspshaped parts 11 is arranged to extend from the licker-in to beside the doffer, slits 10 which extend for the full width of the machine being provided above each worker. Above the cover 9 is mounted a further cover 8 hinged at 15 and that is connected through a duct A<SP>3</SP> with a suction fan 1. Ducts A<SP>1</SP> and A<SP>2</SP> permit removal of dust and fly from the licker-in 3<SP>1</SP> and doffer 4. Note knives 7, 7<SP>1</SP> in the duct A<SP>1</SP> may be of metal, synthetic resin, chip board or other material. Instead of a second cover 8, each slit 10 may lead into an individual duct, each such duct enclosing a stripping knife mounted to promote removal of impurities from the fibres. Several slits can be arranged over each worker and slits may be curved, e.g. helical.
