Abstract
967,801. Carding engines. JAMES MACKIE & SONS CO. Feb. 6, 1961 [Feb. 9, 1960], No. 4578/60. Heading D1N. A carding engine intended for use in the woollen and worsted industries and for treating synthetic fibres, hairs, or mixtures of fibres has the main cylinder clothed with lags with a pinning finer than 64 pins per square inch and has other rollers clothed with fillet or metallic clothing. Lags with 144 pins per square inch are preferred and the pins may be set in resin-impregnated multi-ply wood, for example, wood having 26 plies of lignified birch. Sharply pointed pins, Fig. 3, may be used but it is stated that the best results are achieved when working wool or like fibres if the pin tips have been ground flat, Fig. 2. The carding engine may have its feed rollers and licker-in 7 located beneath doffers 21, 22 and worker and stripper rollers may be located beneath as well as over the main cylinder. Covers 12, 13, 14, 15 are provided, some of which prevent long fibres from falling off the rollers. Tin rollers 16 are also arranged to prevent fibres falling off the worker and clearer rollers.
