Abstract

1,035,857. Carding engines. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. April 28, 1964 [May 13, 1963; Nov. 13, 1963], No. 17558/64. Heading D1N. Fibrous webs are transferred from one rotating surface to another by passing the web round the free end of a stationary blade that is in tangential contact with the second rotating surface. The blade may be flat, though flexible, and may have a helical spring, as 26, arranged to press it against the second surface. Alternatively, the blade may be firmly secured in contact with the second surface. This surface may be a doffing roll, as 14, or it may be a doffing cylinder (Fig. 5 not shown) with the blade passing into the zone between a main cylinder and doffing cylinder. Although the doffing roll 14 may have a relatively smooth surface, it is also envisaged that this roll may be clothed with metallic or fillet card clothing or covered with plush or pile fabric. Surfaces described as relatively smooth include knurled, engraved, etched or sandblasted surfaces. A leather surface is suitable. The doffing roll may be driven relative to the doffing cylinder in a manner either to impose a draft or produce a heavier, more compacted web. The clearance between the doffing cylinder and roll may lie between 1/64" and 5/32" and the angle of the blade to a tangent line common to the two surfaces lies in the range of 10 degrees to 35 degrees. A blade curved convexly relative to the doffing roll may be used.
