A carding machine has the periphery of the main cylinder perforated and connected to an air draught source by a duct disposed within the cylinder with its outlet located remotely of the licker-in so that the air draught will assist in the removal of fibres from the cylinder. In one form, the main cylinder 1 has two internal nozzles 2, 22, one of them being a suction nozzle located close to the licker-in 21 and associated with an air intake 20 and the other being a blowing nozzle facilitating the transfer of fibres to the doffer 4, which is itself provided with similar internal nozzles. A perforated cylinder without card clothing may be employed as a doffer or, alternatively, a foraminous conveyer belt may be used. Material may leave the swift adjacent the blowing nozzle and pass directly between calender rollers, in the vicinity of which the web of material may be divided into bands and drafted. Beneath the swift there may be arranged a foraminous moving apron that passes over a suction box for the removal of waste matter which may be led by the apron into a hopper. The fibrous web leaving the swift or doffer may be impregnated with a plastic or gelatinous material with or without the application of heat.
