Abstract

762,403. Air-draught and cleaning arrangements in carding-engines. BRITISH COTTON INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. May 27, 1955 [May 4, 1954], No. 12887/54. Classes 120 (1) and 120 (3). In a carding-engine, dust and fly are removed and their liberation is reduced by preventing high air pressure in the region of the junction between the main cylinder and the flats at the taker-in end and in the region of the junction between the main cylinder and the doffer, by continuously exhausting air directly from these regions during operation of the engine. The machine shown is equipped at the junction between the main cylinder 11 and flats 12 with a normal taker-in cover 14 and an arcuate cover 16 and a flat cover 17 (with a leather flap 17a contacting the feed roller 18) closed at the ends by plates 19 one of which is connected by a conduit 24 to main trunking 25 of an airexhausting system : a cover 26 with end plates 27, which may be spring-loaded flaps, lies within the flats 12, and air in the space between the covers and the lower run of the flats is exhausted through a conduit 28. At the junction of the cylinder 11 and the doffer 13, the exhausting means comprise a conduit 30 leading from the rip of the cylinder 11 to withdraw fly and dust (caused by oscillation of the doffer comb 29) from the space defined by a deflector plate 31, a raised doffer cover 32, a centrally hinged cover 34 comprising two parts one of which rests on the top calender roller clearer and the other rests on the cover 32 and both of which comprise frames 41 or 38 (with sides 39) and transparent tops 42 or 40, and end plates 43. Dust and fly discharge at the doffer end of the flats and at the junction of the flats 12 and the flats brush 44 is reduced by a hinged, counterweighted filter 45 comprising a fine mesh sieve suspended by a rod 46 to extend across the rip of the brush 44 and flats 12 and having a deflector portion. As illustrated, the entrance to a coiler 33 may be enclosed by a hinged perforated metal cover 47 to deflect and trap fly liberated as the sliver enters the trumpet : also, the front 48 of the machine may be extended to catch fly falling from the comb 29.
