Filed Jan. 30, 1963, Ser. No. 254,869 3 Claims. (Cl. 19-98) This invention relates to a functionally and structurally improved cover for textile machines and especially carding machines.
As such, a cover assembly is provided which may form a part of a new machine or may be substituted for the covering structure ordinarily associated with machines as heretofore used. In either event, it will involve a compact structure capable of ready association with or removal from a machine.
A further object is that of designing a cover assembly permitting of constant observation of the machine in operation without it being necessary for an operator to frequently open the cover or leave it open. Accordingly, superior yarn and material will be produced. Also, the area and especially the ceiling adjacent which the machine is disposed will remain substantially free of lint and fibers.
An additional object is that of providing a cover structure the parts of which will be relatively light so that these parts may be shifted when necessary, for example, to obtain access to the rolls of the machine; the area and components of the assembly embodying ratios and configurations such that maximum efliciency is assured.
With these and other objects in mind, reference is had to the attached sheet of drawings illustrating one practical embodiment of the invention and in which:
The single figure is a perspective view of the cover structure and also including fragments of the adjacent machine portions.
In this view the numeral 1 indicates the side frame of the machine which includes the usual series of rollers and cylinders 2, 3 and 6. These cylinders are rotated in conventional manner and the mechanism cooperates to convert the thick sheet of cotton into the form of ropes or yarns of fibers. The rotatable support of the rolls and cylinders may be effected by having their shafts journaled directly adjacent the frame or, as indicated at 4, bearings may be mounted upon extensions 5 of the frame of this purpose.
The cover proper will include side walls 7 and 8, the upper ends of which are connected by a strip 9 conveniently formed of metal and of a rigid configuration. A panel or panels 10 define the upper end of the cover assembly connected to strip 9; the surface of this part being continued in the form of a panel 11. Hinges as at 12 connect panels 10 and 11 so that the latter may be swung upwardly to expose the space below the housing. A rear panel 13 completes the cover assembly. All of these panels and side walls are formed of a suitable transparent material such as Plexiglas. Therefore the underlying space may be clearly viewed. Conveniently, the cover or housing assembly is additionally strengthened by having reenforcing strips or brackets underlying panels 10, 11 and 13 as indicated at 15. These strips may be suitably secured to the panels as well as to strip 9. As can be seen from the drawing, panels 10 and 13 may be detachably connected to side panels 7 and 8 by means of screws or the like.
United States Patent 0 ice With a view to connecting the cover to the machine and also permitting of its ready removal when necessary, brackets 16 may extend from the frame and terminate in forked portions receiving between their arms stems of bolts upon which wing nuts 17 are mounted. Likewise, further brackets 18 may be coupled, for example, with the bolts securing journals 4 in position and terminate in slotted end portions 19. Through these slots bolts again extend and amount wing nuts 20. As will be understood, the bolts supporting wing nuts 17 and 20 are secured to the side walls of the casing. Therefore the cover may be mounted against movement with respect to the machine frame and in a zone properly overlying rolls or cylinders 2 and 3. Therefore this critical area may at all times be viewed by the operator without it being necessary to swing panel 11 upwardly and thus expose the underlying space.
Side Walls 8 are slotted or contoured, as indicated at 21 and 22. Accordingly, no difliculty Will be experienced in shifting the cover as a unit to attach or detach it from the machine. Likewise, side walls 8 may be extended as indicated at 23 to provide a guard portion overlapping the edge zone of cylinder 6. Thus, danger will be minimized. Also, it will be obvious that the cover may be positioned to best advantage under all conditions as a consequence of the adjustment afforded by the ends of brackets 16 and 18.
Thus, among others, the several objects of the invention, as specifically aforenoted, are achieved. It is apparent that numerous changes in construction and rearrangement of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the claims.
I claim:
I. In combination, a textile carding machine comprising a frame, rolls movably supported on roll carrying shafts journaled to said frame, a transparent plastic cover assembly comprising connected transparent top, rear and side panels, clamping means coupled to said side panels for adjustably supporting said assembly with respect to said machine and a metal strip detachably connected to said side panels at the upper ends thereof, said top panel including a first section detachably connected to said metal strip and a portion of said side walls and a second section hingedly connected to said first section so that said second section may be swung upwardly to expose the space below, and said rear panel being detachably connected to said side panels at a zone remote from said metal strips.

In combination, a textile carding machine as set forth in claim 1 wherein supporting brackets are interposed between side panels and are detachably connected to said rear panel and said first section of said top panel and said side panels being slotted for accommodation of said roll carrying shafts.
3. A cover assembly for application to a textile carding machine of the type having a frame and rolls movably supported on roll carrying shafts journaled to said frame, comprising connected transparent top, rear and side panels, clamping means coupled to said side panels for adjustably supporting said assembly with respect to said machine and a metal strip detachably connected to said side panels at the upper ends thereof, said top panel including a first section detachably connected to said metal strip and a portion of said side walls, and
3 a second section hingedly connected to said first section so that said second section may be swung upwardly to expose the space below, and said rear panel being detachably connected to said side panels at a zone remote from said metal strips.

Claims (1)

1. IN COMBINATION, A TEXTILE CARDING MACHINE COMPRISING A FRAME, ROLLS MOVABLY SUPPORTED ON ROLL CARRYING SHAFTS JOURNALED TO SAID FRAME, A TRANSPARENT PLASTIC COVER ASSEMBLY COMPRISING CONNECTED TRANSPARENT TOP, REAR AND SIDE PANELS, CLAMPING MEANS COUPLED TO SAID SIDE PANELS FOR ADJUSTABLY SUPPORTING SAID ASSEMBLY WITH RESPECT TO SAID MACHINE AND A MENTAL STRIP DETACHABLY CONNECTED TO SAID SIDE PANELS AT THE UPPER ENDS THEREOF, SAID TOP PANEL INCLUDING A FIRST SECTION DETACHABLE CONNECTED TO SAID METAL STRIP AND A PORTION OF SAID SIDE WALLS AND A SECOND SECTION HINGEDLY CONNECTED TO SAID FIRST SECTION SO THAT SAID SECOND SECTION MAY BE SWUNG UPWARDLY TO EXPOSE THE SPACE BELOW, AND SAID REAR PANEL BEING DETACHABLY
