UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. BOKUM, OF JENKINTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO PROCTOR AND SCHWARTZ, INCORPORATED, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORA- TION OLE PENNSYLVANIA.
GARNETI" MACHINE.
i Application filed October To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. BOKUM, a citizen of the United States, residing in Jenkintown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, have invented Improvements in Garnett Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in covers for the fancy rolls and strippers of Garnett machines.
The object of the invention is to so design the cover that the ends can be adjusted to it against the ends of the fancy roll and fancy stripper, so as to prevent the dust and loose fibres escaping between the ends of the fancy roll and the ends of the cover when the fancy roll is rotating at a high speed.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a portion of a Garnctt machine, showing my improved cover for the fancy roll and fancystripper;
Fig. 2 is sectional view on the line 22, Fig. 1.;
'g. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33,
Fig. t is a section of the end taken on the line l--i, Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a detail shown in Fig. 2, taken on the line 5 5, Fig. 3.
l is a portion of the main cylinder housing of a Garnett machine including the arches. The main cylinder is shown at 2 by dotted line, Fig. 1. A casing 3 encloses the fancy roil st and the fancy stripper This casing is made in two parts (5 and 7. The part 6 is secured to the arches of the main housings at 88, and the ends 11l1 are cut away to allow for the shafts 9 and 10 of the roll and stripper and their bearings, respectively. The ends ll ll of the part I are also cut away as shown. The part 7 consists of the two cast metal ends 11-11 and a connecting sheet metal body 12.
The section 7 has tongues 13 at each side, which fit into sockets 14 in the section 6, and latches 15 hold the two parts together.
By releasing the latches 15 the section 7' can be readily removed from the machine.
On the inner side of each end of the sections 6 and 7 of the casing 3 are segmental ribs l616 which fit against the ends of 8, 1925. Serial N0. 61,369.
the fancy roll 4 and the fancy stripper 5, as shown in Fig. 2. The ends of the roll. and stripper are finished smooth, and the abutting edges of the ribs 1616 are also finished smooth, so that a practically tight lit is assured.
In order to adjust the ends 11 to the roll and stripper, slots 17 are formed in the sheet metal body for the bolts 18, which are screwed into the flanges at the edge of the section 7, allowing a certain amount of ad justment, and when the ends are properly adjusted, the parts are secured together by the screws.
By forming ribs on the two ends of the cover of the fancy roll and fancy stripper, the air currents, formed by the rapid rotation of the two rolls, are prevented from escaping through the openings in the end of the casing.
Heretofore, when the fancy roll was driven at high speeds, the circulating air would carry with it quantities of the matev rial being treated, which not only was Wasteful but was objectionable, and the mate rial would adhere to the bearings and other parts of the machine. I
I claim:
1. The combination in a Garnett machine, of a fancy roll; and an enclosing casing having internal ribs at the ends which it against the ends of the roll.
2. The combination in a Garnett machine, of a fancy roll and a fancy stripper; and an enclosing casing having internal ribs at the ends which fit against the ends of the roll and stripper.
3. The combination in a Garnett machine, of a main frame; a fancy roll and a fancy stripper; and a casing for the roll and stripper, said casing being made in twosections, one section being secured to the main frame, and the other section being secured to the first-mentioned section, the ends of the sections having internal ribs fitting against the ends of the roll and stripper.
4,. The combination in a ,casing for a fancy roll and fancy stripper of a Garnett machine, said casing having a body section slotted at the edges; end sections havin internal ribs fittin a ainst the ends b b C of the roll and stripper; and bolts extending through the slots and into the end sections.
WILLIAM F. BOKUM.
