4 Claims. (Cl. 19-105) This invention relates to a licker-in for a card machine and has for an object the provision of improved means for mounting the teeth carrying members on the l1cker1n whereby they may be readily installed and removed to accommodate either coarse or line ibers.
Another object of my invention is to provide a llckerin of the character designated in which the teeth carrying members are annular and extend diagonally to the longitudinal axis of the licker-in roll whereby a 21g-zag motion is imparted to the teeth carrying member as 1t rotates, thus thoroughly cleaning the liber before it passes to the main carding cylinder.
Another object of my invention is to provide a lickerin ofthe character designated inv which the individual teeth carrying members may be positioned closer together to obtain more teeth per inch on the licker-in.
A more specific object of my invention is to provide a licker-in for a card machine which shall embody a plurality of annular teeth carrying members which are separated by annular spacer members, other annular members adjacent the ends of the licker-in roll which are wedge shaped as viewed in transverse cross section, together with means for urging the annular wedge shaped members inwardly toward each other whereby the teeth carrying members and the spacer members are held in a diagonal position relative to the longitudinal axis of the licker-in roll.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a licker-in of the character designated which shall be simple of construction, economical of manufacture and one which may be employed on conventional type carding machines.
As is well known in the art to which my invention relates, the licker-in plays a very important part in the carding operation and the removal of heavy trash, motes and the like from the ber. Heretofore, it has been the usual practice to provide licker-ins in the form of a hollow metal roll having spiral grooves extending from one end to the other into which rows of teeth are inserted. Accordingly, all of thespirals extend in one direction thus tending to throw all of the bers in that direction. Also, the construction of the licker-in roll and the installation of the teeth carrying members have been arduous tasks which require very skilled labor and consume a substantial amount of time. The installation and removal of the spiral teeth from the licker-in cylinder have usually been carried out at the factory, thus necessitating the provision of extra licker-ins for use while the damaged or worn ones are repaired. Also, considerable expense is incurred in transporting the heavy licker-in rolls to the factory for repairs.
To overcome the above and other difficulties, I provide a licker-in roll having a cylindrical outer surface. Telescoping over the roll are annular teeth carrying members which are separated by annular spacer members. The teeth carrying members and spacer members are then urged into lrm engagement with each other by an.
Patented Oct. 13, 1959 lCC nular end members which are wedge shaped, as viewed in transverse cross section, whereby the teeth carrying members are held in a position which is diagonal to the longitudinal axis of the roll.
Apparatus embodying features of myinvention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view, partly broken away and in section, showing my improved licker-in associated with conventional type carding apparatus;
Fig. 2 is 'a sectional view taken generally along the line II-II of Fig. 1, the licker-in cover being omitted for the sake of clarity;
Fig. 3 is an elevational view showing one of the annular teeth carrying members; and,
Fig. 4 is an elevational view showing one of the annular spacer members.
Referring now 4to the drawing for a better understanding of my invention, -I vshow a conventional type carding machine embodying a frame 10 having a lap roll 11 for supporting a lap 12 to be carded. The cotton is fed to the licker-in over a feed plate 13 by means of a feed roll 14.
My improved licker-in comprises a roll 16 having a cylindrical outer surface. The roll 16 is preferably formed of a relatively light metal, such as aluminum or the like, and is in the form of a cylindrical shell. Telescoping over the roll 16 is a plurality of annular teeth carrying members 17. An inwardly extending key member 18 is provided on each of the teeth carrying members 17 in position to engage a longitudinally extending groove or keyway 19 formed in the roll 16, as shown in Fig. 1. The teeth carrying members 17 are heldin spaced relation to each other by annular spacer members 21 which may be formed of any suitable material, such as metal, plastic or the like.
Mounted adjacent opposite ends of the roll 16 are annular members 22 and 23 which are wedge shaped, as viewed in transverse cross section, as shown in Fig. 2. Inturned annular flanges 24 are provided at the periphery of the `members 22 and 23 and are adapted to telescope over the ends of the roll 16.
Secured to the inner surface of the roll 16 as by welding at 26 is a transverse member 27, which may be in the form of a disc member or the like. 'l'he'transverse member 27 is provided with an internally threaded opening 28 for receiving the externally threaded end 29 of stubv shaft members 31. Suitable bearings 32 are provided in the frame 10 for supporting the shafts 31. Mounted on the shafts 31 in position to engage the outer surface of the annular members 22 and 23 are abutment members 33. The shafts 31 are provided with suitable transverse openings 34 adjacent the ends thereof for receiving a suitable tool 36 whereby the shafts may be turned while the roll 16 is held stationary, thus causing the abutment 33 to urge the annular members 22 and 23 inwardly toward each other whereby the teeth carrying members 17 and the spacer members 21 are held diagonally to the longitudinal axis of the roll 16. Mounted on one of the shafts 31 is a gear 37 which in turn is connected to a suitable source of power whereby rotary motion is mparted to the roll 16.
From the foregoing description, the assembly and operation of my improved apparatus will be readily' understood. The teeth carrying members 17 are positioned on the roll 16 with the spacer members 21 positioned therebetween, as shown in Fig. 2. 'Ihe annular members 22 and 23 are positioned on the stub shafts 31 inwardly of the abutments 33 and the threaded portion 29 of each shaft 31 is screwed into the threaded opening 28 of the transverse member 27. Each inturned annular l flange 24 telescopes over the adjacent ends of the roll 16 thus urging the teeth carrying members 17 and the annular members 21 into rm engagement with each other whereby they are heldin a position which isMd'i.- agonal to the longitudinal axis of the roll 16. That is, the wedge shaped annular members 22 and 23 de# termine the angle at which the teeth carrying members and spacer members are held. With the stub shafts 31 thus secured lirmly to the roll 16, the tool 36 is removed whereupon the roll is adapted for rotation by the gear 37.
Upon rotation of the roll 16, a zig-zag motion is imparted tothe annular teeth carrying members 17 thus causing the fibers to be thoroughly cleaned prior to being transferred to the main cardingV cylinder.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have devised an improved lickerin which greatly facilitates the repair and installation of different sizes and types of teeth carrying members. By providing individual, annular teeth carrying members which telescope over the roll 16 with the spacer members positioned therebetween, 'together with the annular wedge shaped members at the ends of the roll which determine the angle at which the teeth carrying members extend, my improved licker-in may be readily disassembled and assembled in a minimum of time by unskilled labor. vidual annular teeth carrying members, an individual member may be removed for repair without having'to change the entire teeth carrying'assembly, as would be the kcase where a' continuous spiral member is employed y to carry the teeth.
While I have shown my invention in but one form it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited, but is susceptible of various changes and modifications without departing from the spirit thereof, and l desire, therefore, that only such limitations shallbe placedthereupon as are specifically set forth in .the
