INVENTOR. HAYWOQD 's. GARDEN ATTOQNEYE United States Patent LAP SPLIT PREVENTING lVIEANS FOR ATTACH- MENT TO A COlVIBER The present invention relates to textile machines generally and specifically to means for preventing splits in laps of fibers for attachment to a comber.
An object of the present invention is to provide an attachment for a comber for the purpose of preventing splits in the laps as layers of the laps are unwound and fed to the nipper knife of the comber.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a means for preventing split laps of a lap of fibers when supported on the feeding rolls of a comber which is simple in structure, sturdily constructed, one having long-life characteristics, one economical to manufacture and assemble, and one which is highly effective in action.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which:
Figure l is an isometric view of the lap feeding portion of a comber, with two rolls of fiber in lap form sup ported on the feed rolls, the view being skeletonized for simplification;
Figure 2 is an end view of a portion of the assembly shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an isometric view of the means of the presentinvention; and
Figure 4 is a view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3 with a portion of the support broken away.
Referring in greater detail to the drawings in which like A numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, in Figure'l the reference numeral 10 designates the rock shaft of a comber. The lap split preventing means of the present invention is designated generally by the reference numeral 12 and is shown attached to the rock shaft 10.
The horizontally disposed rock shaft 10 oscillates back and forth and the driving means for the rock shaft 10 includes a pulley 14 on a shaft 16 rotatably supported in a' portion of the comber frame 18. A pinion 20 on the end of the shaft 16 remote from the pulley 14 is in mesh with another pinion 22 on a counter shaft 24 also supported for rotation in the frame 18, the means for support not being shown for reasons of simplification. A disc 26 is carried on the shaft 24 and carries on one face a stub shaft 28 having a slide block 30 rotatably supported thereon. The slide block 30 moves upwardly and downwardly in a slide 32 responsive to the rotation of the disc 26, the slide 32 being mounted on a cross head 34 connected to the frame 18 for reciprocal movement.
An arm or lever 36 is dependingly secured to the rock shaft 10 and has its lower end bifurcated and straddling a stub shaft 38 carried by the cross head 34-. In Figure 2 the oscillating movement of the shaft 10 is illustrated by the dotted line showings of a lever 40 which is dependingly carried by the rock shaft 10, the lever 40 being a part of the mechanism which imparts step-by-step rotation to the means which feeds the textile fiber lap to the comber. This mechanism is not illustrated nor described as not being a part of the present invention.
The comber, with which the means for preventing split laps according to the present invention is associated, includes a pair of horizontally disposed feed rollers 42 and 44 on one side of and spaced from the rock shaft 10 and a similar pair of feed rollers 46 and 48 on the other side of and spaced from the rock shaft 10. The rollers of each pair of rollers are horizontally disposed and are parallel with respect to each other and with respect to the rock shaft 10.
The reference numerals 50 and 50' represent textile fibers supplied to the comber in layers rolled in lap form, the laps resting upon the feed rollers 42 and 44 and 46 and 48, respectively.
The means for delivering the layers of fiber fromthe laps 50 and 50 include a horizontally disposed bar 52 over which the layer 54 moves to the sliver pan 56. A bar 52 and sliver pan 56 is associated with each of the pairs of rollers.
The device or means 12 of the present invention comprises an upstanding support 58 having its lower end mounted in a bore provided in a block 60, this block 60 being affixed to one leg of an angle iron member 62. In Figure 1 it will be seen that the angle iron member 62 is secured by screws 64 to the upper end portion of the lever 40 above the rock shaft 10.
A block 66 is carried on the upper end of the support 58 and is provided with a pair of transversely arranged bores 68 and 70. In the bore 68 is adjnstably positioned a horizontally disposed arm 72 secured by a machine screw 74. A horizontally disposed comb bar 76 is positioned above and spaced from and parallel to the feed roll 44 and has one end formed integrally with the end of the arm 72 remote from the block 66. Another horizontally disposed arm 78 is positioned in the bore 70 and carries on its free end a horizontally disposed second comb bar 80. Another machine screw 74 secures the arm 78 in any position of adjusted movement transversely of the rock shaft 10.
A set crew 82 threadedly received in a bore in the block 60 providesmeans for adjustable movement of the support 58 upwardly or downwardly.
In Figure 1 a second device or means 12 of the present invention is shown located at the other end of the laps 50 and 50'. Either one device or means 12 may be used ,the comb bar 76 first from the position spaced from the feed roll 44 to a position in which the comb bar 76 engages the layer 54 at the point of separation of the layer 54 from the lap 50 as the layer 54 is unwound therefrom. Upon oscillating movement of the rock shaft 10 in the other direction the other comb bar is carried to a similar position with respect to the separated layer 84 being unwound from the lap 50'. As the pairs of rollers 42 and 44 rotate in step by step rotational movements to unwind the lap 50, the comb bar 76 engages the layer 54 and prevents the lap from splitting due to the interlacing of the fibers of one layer with the adjacent layer at the end of the lap 50. The same occurs with 3 wardly to make effective the prevention of splits in the lap by the action of the comb bars 76 and 80.
What is claimed is:
1. In a textile machine operating upontfiber supplied thereto in layers rolled in lap form, a horizontally disposed rock shaft, a pair of horizontally disposed spaced feed rollers arranged on one side of said rock shaft and spaced therefrom and adapted to support a rolled lap thereon, means for preventing the splitting of the lap end comprising an upstanding support positioned above said rock shaft exteriorly of and adjacent the end of a lap when supported on said feed rolls, the lower end of said support being connected to said rock shaft for movement therewith, a comb bar positioned above and spaced from and parallel to the one of said feed rolls adjacent said rock shaft and connected to the upper end of said support for movement with said support, said comb bar upon movement of said rock shaft in one direction moving from the spaced position to a position engaging the portion of a lap layer adjacent the lap end at the point of separation of said layer from a lap when supported on said feed rolls.
2. In a textile machine operating upon fiber supplied thereto in layers rolled in lap form, a horizontally disposed rock shaft, a pair of horizontally disposed spaced feed rollers arranged on one side of said rock shaft and spaced therefrom and adapted to support a rolled lap support a rolled lap thereon with said laps in alignment, means for preventing the splitting of the lap and of each of said laps comprising an upstanding support positioned above said rock shaft exteriorly of and adjacent the aligned ends of said laps when supported on each of said pairs of rollers, the lower end of said support being connected to said rock shaft for movement therewith, a comb bar positioned above and spaced from and parallel to each of the ones of said pairs of rollers adjacent said rock shaft and connected to the upper end of said support for movement with said support, one of said comb bars upon movement of said rock shaft in one direction a moving from the spaced position to a position engaging thereon, means for preventing the splitting of the lap end comprising an upstanding support positioned above said rock shaft exteriorly of and adjacent the end of a lap when supported on said feed rolls, the lower end of said support being connected to said rock shaft for movement therewith, a block carried on the upper end of said support, a horizontally disposed arm arranged transversely of said rock shaft and having one end connected to said block, a comb bar positioned above and spaced from and parallel to the one of said feed rolls adjacent said rock shaft and having one end secured to'the other end of said arm, said comb bar upon movement of said rock shaft in one direction moving from the spaced position to a position engaging the portion of a lap layer adjacent the lap end at the point of separation of said layer from a lap when supported on said feed rolls.
3. In a textile machine operating upon fiber supplied thereto in layers rolled in lap form, a horizontally disposed rock shaft, a pair of horizontally disposed spaced rollers arranged on each side of said rock shaft and spaced therefrom, each pair of rollers being adapted to the portion of a lap layer of the lap on one of said pairs of rollers adjacent the lap and at the point of separation of said layer from said lap when supported on said one pair of rollers, the other of said comb bars upon movement of said rock shaft in the other direction moving from the spaced position to a position engaging the portion of a lap layer of the lap on the other of said pairs of rollers adjacent the lap end at the point of separation of said layer from said lap when supported on said other pair of rollers.
4. In a textile machine operating upon fiber supplied thereto in layers rolled in lap form, a horizontally disposed rock shaft, a pair of horizontally disposed spaced feed rollers arranged on one side of said rock shaft and spaced therefrom and adapted to support a rolled lap thereon, means for preventing the splitting of the lap end comprising an upstanding support positioned above said rock shaft exteriorly of and adjacent each end of a lap when supported on said feed rolls, the lower end of each of said supports being connected to said rock shaft for movement therewith, a comb bar positioned above and spaced from and parallel to the one of said feed rolls adjacent said rock shaft and connected to the upper end of the adjacent support for movement with said support, each of said comb bars upon movement of said rock shaft in one direction moving from the spaced position to a position engaging the adjacent portion of a lap layer adjacent the lap end at the point of separation of said layer from a lap when supported on said feed rolls.
