Abstract

1,113,511. Drafting-apparatus BREVETS ET. APPLICATIONS TEXTILES BREVATEX. 10 Jan., 1966 [12 Jan., 1965], No. 1070/66. Heading D1D. Drafting-apparatus comprises two porcupine rollers 21, 22 Fig 1, disposed one after the other between a pair of feed rollers 1, 2 and a pair of drawing rollers 4, 3; the porcupines are arranged so that their needles do not inter - engage, and the needles on the porcupine located closest to the feed rollers engage the introduced fibres to advance them to the other porcupine which combs them into parallel arrangement, the drawing rollers receiving the fibres so combed and delivering them from the apparatus as a strand; the needles of the second porcupine are more densely arranged but are shorter than those of the first porcupine; and the porcupines are rotated at slightly different speeds. In relation to the surface speed of the feed rollers, the surface speed of the first porcupine lies between 97 and 103%, and that of the second porcupine between 80-96%, while the weighting of the drawing-rollers is considerable, amounting to about 8 kg. per cm. of roller-width. The porcupines are associated with "dabber" elements (e.g. rollers 27, 28 mounted on the ends of a curved, centrallypivoted rocker) and the second porcupine is arranged near the nip of the delivery rollers. The lower rollers 1, 3 consist of fluted bosses, each defining a working position, on a common shaft mounted in bearings at its ends and centre. The corresponding upper rollers have plastics cots and are arranged in pairs, the delivery pairs being supported at the shaft between each pair by a saddle in a weighting- arm 11, while each feed pair are on a shaft whose ends slide freely in blocks 17, Fig. 3. Each set of porcupines is mounted on a common shaft supported at its centre and ends in bearings. The "dabbers" are mounted to slide against the action of a spring 35, Fig. 3, in a support in the weighting-arm. The arm is loaded by an adjustable spring 65 compressed between a part 66 adjustably secure to the frame and the free end of a pivoted arm 67, and a rod 72 of which one end bears on the arm 67 near its pivot, and the other is hooked over an eccentric pin 75 on a spindle mounted in the weighting-arm and secured to a locking-lever 78, the arrangement providing locking and unlocking positions over a dead-centre position. The lower end of rod 72 carries a spring 87 tensioned between the pivoted arm 67 and a stop to prevent the rod falling when the weighting arm is released. The rod is slightly curved, and the spring 65 is long in relation to the emplitude of its movement during working; these features and the relative arrangement of the parts make for a powerful but flexible loading arrangement. There are a clearer 37 Fig. 3, for the upper delivery roller, a clearer brush 38 for the second porcupine, an additional pair of feed rollers 51, 52, and an additional lower delivery roller 5, in contact with the roller 4, while on the outlet side, a guide 55, a roller 56, a guide 57 lead each roving to funnel in the rotating cover of a coiler, two rovings being coiled in each can. One or both of the porcupines may be arranged above the sliver path, and the "dabbers" may be plates of steel or plastics material. The drive to the various rollers and the cans is described.
