Abstract

957,674. Thermal switches. GEORGE H. SCHOLES & CO. Ltd. Aug. 11, 1981 [May 12 1960], No. 16845/60. Heading H2B. A thermal switch includes a casing having a substantially rectangular base outline within which a bimetallic or other compound actuating strip is disposed substantially diagonally of the rectangle. Bimetallic strip 1, Fig. 2, carries a contact 12 biased towards a fixed contact 13, the attraction of a permanent magnet 9 on an armature 8 carried by the strip 1 ensuring snap closing and opening of the contacts. Strip 1 is hinged at 3 and a lateral extension 2a therefrom carries a control dial 6 for adjusting the operating temperature by varying the biasing force on the strip 1. An earthing strip 19, Fig. 1, connects the adjustment mechanism with one of the ferrules 20 for receiving the cover-fixing screws. A carbon resistor 16 may be provided for increasing the sensitivity of the switch where the load current is low, i.e. up to 10 amps., by acting as an anticipatory heater. One end of the carbon resistor 16 is connected to an external terminal 17 and so can be disconnected as required.
