Abstract

1,039,081. Automatic circuit breakers. S. SHIMODA. Feb. 15, 1963 [April 9, 1962], No. 6252/63. Heading H2B. An overload circuit breaker comprises a handle 2 which operates contacts 6, 7 through a cam 24 and which is held set by a permanent magnet 12 against a spring bias 19, the magnet 12 having a thermally demagnetizable polepiece 13 adjacent a heater 9 in series with the contacts so that on overload the force of magnet 12 on an armature 17 attached to the handle is overcome by the spring 19 to open the contacts. Ambient temperature compensation is provided by a bimetal spring support 60 and in the closed position an additional magnet 22 opposes spring 19. The temperature rise necessary to release the switch is progressively reduced for greater overloads by the electromagnetic effect of the loop-shaped heater 9 as explained in the Specification. In a modified arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown), magnet 22 is replaced by a spring-locking device 53 and a cam 71 is provided to hold handle 32 in an intermediate position after automatic release. The polepiece 13 may be of barium ferrite or of 29% nickel-steel and in the Specification details are given, graphically, of the variation of the magnetic properties of these and of an Alnico V magnet with temperature.
