Abstract
1,028,634. Thermal switches. I.T.E. CIRCUIT BREAKER CO. March 25, 1963 [Sept. 20, 1962], No. 11785/63. Heading H2B. A moulded case overload responsive thermal switch has a bimetal actuator 21 heated by a current carrying loop 18 and mounted at one end on a main support 22 attached to which is an auxiliary support 24 deformable with respect to 22 by a preset adjustment screw 25, the complete unit comprising bimetal and supports 22, 24 being pivotable about a bearing surface 29 of the housing by a knob 28 to set the operating temperature. The bimetal 21 acts through a slide 31 on a coil spring 47 to snap contacts 32, 33 open upon overload but the bimetal is insufficiently resilient to reclose the switch upon cooling, this being done by depressing a reset slide 50 against a bias spring (Figs. 1, 4, not shown). The slide 50 can be held down, by a latch 58 (Fig. 2, not shown) engaging a slot in the slide, when the switch becomes self reclosing. Substitution of a different slide 50a (Fig. 6, not shown) allows the switch to be opened manually as well. Alternative forms of the heater are described (Figs. 6a, 6b, not shown). Auxiliary signalling contacts 43, 44 are provided. Three overload switches 10 are pluggable into a base 150 mounted upon a contactor 200 (not described) and connections are made within the base to connect all the contacts 32, 33 in series with the contactor coil (Fig. 7a, 8, not shown).
