Abstract

1398637 Thermal switches EATON CORP 31 July 1972 [27 Aug 1971] 35702/72 Heading H1N A thermal switch comprises a bimetal 1 moving through pin 14 as movable contact 8, and an electromagnet 3 arranged to act on bimetal 1 or pin 14 to vary the switching temperature by varying the current through electromagnet 3. An armature or polepiece 15 of magnetic material may be provided. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, bimetal 2 is a bowed disc, which may or may not be snap-acting, and electromagnetic 3 acts on pin 14 through armature 9 fastened to pin 14. A third embodiment, Fig. 3, is similar to Fig. 2, but with the electromagnet 3 above disc 2 and operating on disc 2. In a fourth embodiment, Fig. 4, electromagnet 3 holds a hinged armature 12 against pin 14 actuated by bimetal 1. The electromagnet may be used to restore the bi-metals to their original positions. Circuits are given, Figs. 5-8 (not shown) for supplying and switching the electromagnets and may include variable resistors for varying the currents through the electromagnets for varying the switching temperature.
