Abstract

945,879. Paper and like bags. BOWATER RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. Jan. 16, 1961 [Jan. 22, 1960; Oct. 21, 1960], Nos. 2488/60 and 36281/60. Heading B8K. A bag or sack (Fig. 1) comprises a flattened tube of flexible sheet material, which may be a single or a composite ply such as a paper/polythene laminate provided that the inner juxtaposed surfaces are of polythene or a thermoplastic, and the bag is closed at one end by a transverse heat seal 1, and rectangular portions 10 are removed by cutting along lines 11 and 13 with the end of the tube then folded about lines 14 into a block bottom thereby bringing marginal portions 15 of the edges bounding the removed portions 10 into juxtaposition with their heat sealable surfaces into face to face contact and passing the upstanding marginal portions between heated co-operating pressure members. To relieve the stress on the heat seals on the block bottom closure, a shaped overlay of paper may be adhesively secured to said closure after the sealed marginal portions have been folded. In another embodiment in Fig. 4 one of the corners of the bag may be provided with a valve sleeve 16 made of polythene, a thermoplastic or paper coated with a thermoplastic, having a slip of silicone impregnated glass cloth lying within it to prevent the inner surfaces of the valve sleeve from sticking together when it is heat sealed to the marginal portions. The sleeve is shaped to correspond to the marginal portions so that a tight seal may be effected. On filling of the bag the sleeve is heat sealed to provide a package resistant to the penetration of moisture.
