990,153. Infusers and like packages. G. J. D. WELIN-BERGER. March 16, 1964 [March 18, 1963], No. 10923/64. Heading B8C. A bag 3, with contents for brewing a beverage is enclosed in an outer protective envelope 4, the edge 18 of which remains connected to the bag by a string 5 after withdrawal of the bag (Fig. 3) and is used for holding the bag after immersion in the beverage. In the form shown, envelopes 4 are formed around bags 3 by intermittently advancing a web of paper 6 between guiding and folding devices 8 and packing plates 11, 12 (Fig. 1). Bags 3 are lowered therein and the plates are brought together to cut the web 6 by knives 16 and incisions 17 and to seal the open edges of the envelopes 4 so formed (Fig. 2). The strings 5, attached to the centre of the two compartmented bags 3, and, if required, a reinforcing strip 10, from a supply roll 9, are clamped in the upper sealed edge 18, the sealing being effected by heat sealing, in which case a plastics string will be more firmly secured to the envelope and may be welded to a plastics bag, or by cold contact adhesive. The plates 11, 12 may be replaced by rotary members in which case the web 6 is continuously advanced.
