Abstract

973,297. Packages with tear-strips. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Oct. 1, 1962 [Oct. 5, 1961], No. 37042/62. Headings B8C and B8K. A thermoplastic tear tape 12 (Figs. 2 and 3) bonded by a linear seal 14 to two layers 13 of stretchable thermoplastic film is stronger than the film and has corrugations with a component extending transversely up to the seal: this is said to ensure that the film 13 tears along the puckering 15 formed adjacent the seal 14. The tear strip 12 may be embossed, as shown, to provide the corrugations which may, however, be at right angles to the seal 14. The tape may be applied to a wrapping web, before wrapping. Alternatively, it may be sealed to the opening of a bag to effect closure of the bag, and may include a portion folded over the end 13 (Fig. 3) of the bag. In a further alternative the tape is secured to the bottom of a bag, leaving the mouth at the other end open for subsequent filling. The tape may be sealed or otherwise secured to one ply at the mouth of an unsealed bag, so that sealing the mouth after filling reseals the tape and both plies together. The tape may be of different material from the plies, and may be coloured or carry printed matter. The seal 14 may be disposed at one edge of the tape 12.
