Abstract
851,134. Packages. HESSER MASCHINENFABRIK A.G., F. June 19, 1958 [Oct. 18, 1957(2)], No. 19595/58. Classes 94(1) and 94(2). A flat bag package, particularly for liquids, has a protective cover 2 connected to the mouth and to the lateral margins only of the bag 1 and allows a certain amount of relative movement of the bag within the cover. More than one bag may be shielded by a single cover. The bag and cover may both be of polyethylene, the cover preferably being stiffer than the bag, or may be of foil coated with a heat sealable coating. The cover may be of cardboard or metal foil or strips of these materials may be placed between the bag and cover and be printed to indicate the contents or origin. An edge of the cover may be stiffened by a flange 9, Fig. 3. The bag may have a duct 85, Fig. 3b, in a sealed corner 83 the duct being cut through at 86 when the bag is opened. In another form the bag tapers upwards. Two rows of bags may be formed simultaneously by leading a tube of foil 11, Fig. 4, over a former 14, applying to each side two strips 15, 16 and 17, 18 laid sideby-side with a gap 37 between them, Figs. 4, 5. Seals 24, 25 are formed by wheels 26, 27, 28, 29 and cutters 30, 31 remove the top exposed surface of the tube 11. Transverse seams 36 are formed subsequently. An alternative method of production comprises folding a tube 11 to the form shown in Fig. 7a, forming transverse seams thereacross to form the bags, cutting away the outermost layer at 45 and passing the tube over a former 47, Fig. 8, so that the open mouthed bags are presented for filling. Wheels 49, 50 subsequently seal the bags. In a further method, Figs. 11 and 13, a strip 61 is folded longitudinally and strips 64, 65 are laid on each side thereof, wheels 66, 67 form a seam 68 and a nozzle 71 fills each bag. Jaws 73, 74 form transverse seams. In a modification of this method, a single strip is folded to W form.
