Abstract
934,195. Vertical steam boilers. MARSHALL & ANDERSON Ltd. Oct. 19, 1961 [Oct. 24, 1960], No. 36342/60. Class 123 (2). A shell structure for a vertical steam boiler comprises a lower water drum 11 and an upper steam drum 10 which are connected by an internal downcomer 18 and surrounding water tubes 30, a corrugated tubular furnace 19 in the lower drum extending from an opening in one side of the drum 11 towards the opposite side. As shown, the furnace consists of a horizontal tube which has corrugations 28 along at least part of its length and is connected by a vertical flue 20 to the annular combustion chamber 31 containing the tubes 30. The holes for the tubes 30 in the tube plates 14, 15 are centred on intersection points of a grid of two sets of parallel lines, one set being parallel with the vertical central plane of the furnace tube; this feature facilitates cleaning of the tubes by brushing. A feed water pipe (not shown) is led through the drum 11 upwards through the downcomer 18 terminating at the top thereof in a perforated delivery branch. In a modification, provision is made for allocating a proportion of the chamber 31 to a separate heating medium, e.g. the exhaust gases of a diesel engine, by inserting division plates extending from the downcomer to the surrounding casing 32 and vertically from tube plate to tube plate.
