Abstract

<PICT:0831890/III/1> A process for heating a pot still, by fuel combustion, comprises initially heating the still in the lower region thereof and utilizing exhausted hot gases from combustion for heating water to produce steam. In a preferred embodiment for use in the distillation of malt whisky the apparatus comprises a spirit pot still 1, a washpot still 2, an oil-burning heating system 4 and 5, one for each still, and a water-tube boiler 3 located in juxtaposition with the stills. Oil is burnt in horizontal burning jets into cylindrical combustion chambers 6 and 7 on top of which the stills rest. Combustion gases flow into heating chambers 8 and 9 and through conduits 12 and 13 into the nest 3A of the water tube boiler 3 to produce steam in these tubes. This steam may be lead through pipes 20 and 22 to heating coils 21 and 23 respectively.
