Abstract

In a method of burning fuel oil the oil is heated under pressure and injected into a stream of flue gas having a sufficiently high temperature to vapourize the oil, the resulting mixture of oil vapour and flue gas being passed, optionally after storage, to a place of combustion and combustion products therefrom are recycled to provide the stream of flue gas. The method may be used to generate steam in the apparatus shown in Fig. 1. Fuel oil in a tank 30 is circulated in a circuit including a heating coil and a branch conduit leading to a nozzle 16 arranged in a chamber 15 through <PICT:0932884/III/1> which a stream of flue gas is circulated from an upper part of the steam-generator. The mixture of vaporized oil and flue gas is burned with preheated air supplied through line 19. The flue gases circulated to the chamber 15 are withdrawn at two levels through pipes 10 and 11 adjacent the bottom and top of the superheater tubes 5 by a blower 13, the proportion at each level being controlled by a valve 12 to supply a flue gas having the desired temperature of e.g. 300 DEG C.
