An overhead ropeway has two dollies 3, 4, Fig. 1, which move in unison, the blocks 13, 14 thereof being independently movable and supporting a hook 16. As described, the dollies 3, 4 are traversed by a winch 15 and ropes 17, 18 fastened together at 19. Winches 7, 8 and ropes 5, 6 raise and lower the blocks 13, 14 respectively. In a second embodiment, secondary dollies 19, 20, Fig. 3, are supported on ropes 21, 22 which are attached to the primary dollies 3, 4. The hook 16 is supported by blocks 13, 14 and ropes 5, 6 which each pass over pulleys on one of the primary dollies and both the secondary dollies. Operation of the winches 7, 8 simultaneously and in the same direction lifts or lowers the hook 16 vertically. If the rope 5 is wound in by the winch 7 alone, the dollies 19, 20 will move towards the dolly 3, the hook 16 being simultaneously lifted. As shown in Fig. 5, the ropes 1, 2 may be supported by derricks 23, 24, the derricks being braced by ropes 25, 26 having compensating weights 29, 30 suspended therefrom. Stays 27, 28 are also attached to the ropes 1, 2 and bear weights 31, 32. Fig. 6 shows a construction of runner. When the drawing rope 17 moves relative to the carrying rope 1 the pulleys 40, 41, which are urged into engagement with the rope 17 by a spring 37, drive a pulley 38 through a drive member 46, thus moving the runner along the rope 1.
