899,807. Surgical syringes. WELLCOME FOUNDATION Ltd. Aug. 20, 1959 [Aug. 25, 1958; Nov. 6, 1958], No. 28468/59. Class 81 (2). [Also in Group XVII] A dispenser for introducing free flairing comminuted material into a container of diluent comprises a collapsible container for the comminuted material having an outlet, normally closed by a valve or a stopper, and a dispensing member for communicating with the diluent container, the valve or stopper being displaced by increasing the pressure within the collapsible container by the application of external pressure so that the material can flow from the container by way of the dispensing member. A collapsible polyethylene container has in its neck a valve device 13 of rubber or synthetic plastic comprising a skirt 14 and a flap valve 15. A channelled piercing device 16 is screwed on the neck of the container so that it bears against a flange 12 and holds the valve device in position. A sheath 17 for the piercing device is secured by a seal 18 surrounding the neckengaging portion of the piercing device and the neck flange of the container. In use, the sheath and the seal are removed and the piercing device is caused to puncture a diaphragm closing the container of diluent. Pressure applied to the container walls forces open the valve 15 and causes the comminuted material to flow into the diluent. Instead of the valve 15, a stopper (not shown) which is blown out when the container is squeezed may be provided, fins on the inner wall of the piercing device preventing the stopper from occluding the outlet from the container.
