HYPODERMIC SYRINGE.
Application led October 29, 1919. Serial No. 334,182.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, LUELLA L. GooLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arli'ngton,` in -the county of Middlesexand' State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hypode-rmic Syringes, of which the 4following is a speciication.
This invention relates` chiefly to a hypodermic syringe, comprising a containerv 1n which a charge of liquid serum or other medicament is hermetically sealed, and a hypodermic needle secured to the container, the syringe being provided with a rupturable closure between the needle and the charge of liquid, normally preventing the passage of liquid to the lumen of the needle, and with means for rupturing said closure when the liquid is to be administered.
The inventionis embodied in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe lbody which may be a collapsible tube made of a suitable yductile metal or alloy, 13 (Figures 1, 2 and 3) represents a rigid head fixed to the inner end of the body and forming one end of the container, said head being preferably made of a -malleable, metal or alloy.
14 represents a hypodermic needle, rigidly secured in the head 13, the lumen of the needle communicating with the container when the closure or diaphragm hereinafter described--is ruptured.' 15 (Figures 1 and 2) represents a exible diaphragm, interposed between the needle and a charge of liquid in the container, and adapted normallyv to prevent the passa e of liquid to the lumen of the needle. Said diaphragm may be made of any suitable material ada ted to be ruptured, as hereinafter described suitable materials being animal-membrane and tin foil.
- The diaphragm lis secured with the body 12 to the head 13, to form a liquid-tight jolnt. As here shown, the marginal portlon of the diaphragm forms an annular ange 16, which bears on a rigid annular seat formed by the inner side of yan annular groove 17 in the head 13. The said marginal portion or flange` and the open end of the body 12 are inserted in the groove 17 and confined therein by external pressure on the periphery of the head- 13, so applied as to press the outer side of the groove 17 against the body 12, the marginal portion of the diaphragm being thus clamped against the seat formed by the inner side of the groove 17, so that a liquid-tight joint is formed between the diaphragm and the head. The diaphragm4 is adapted to be flexed outwardly or toward the head 13, by pressure exerted on a charge of liquid in the container, by compression of the body 12, means being provided for causing rupture of the diaphragm when it is so flexed.-
As shown by Figure 1, the head 13 is provided with a -diaphragm-rupturing spur20, arranged to penetrate tlie diaphragm when the latter is outwardly flexed. The diaphragm is normally separated from the spur as shown by full lines, and is forced on to the spur when flexed outwardly, as shown by dotted lines. The spur is preferably the inner end of a double pointed needle, as shown, although it is obvious that the spur may be independent of the needle.
In the form shown by Figure 3, the diaphragm, designated by 15, is secured with the body to the head 13, as above described, and as shown by Figure 1, and is vrupturi able wholly by pressure of the liquid against it, a space 22 being provided between the y normal position of the diaphragm, indicated by full lines, and the inner end of the needle, so that the liquid pressure distends and bursts the diaphragm, as indicated by dotted lines. l
In lthe preferred embodiment Vof 'the invention shown by Figures 4 and 5, the body 12 has a rigid head 13b,vintegral with the'v body and containing a cavity 25. 26 represents a holder formed as a shell, preferably of ductile metal such as tin, fitting said cavity, and having an annular seat 26l and an annular flange 26b which is rolled or spun to embrace and clamp together the margins s' until it is ruptured.
of an annulus 27 and a diaphragm 15, and clamp the marginalsporton of. the diaphragm closely against the seat 26, and thus form a li uid-tight joint. The annulus 27 is relative y stiff, and is not displaceable by i not in use.
Each of the above described embodiments of the invention comprises the following elements; a container having a coin )ressible body portion and a rigid end portion p rovided with a seat, the said rigid end portion in Figures 1 and 3, being the head 13 and the seat bein the inner side of the roove 17, While in `igures 4 and 5, the rigid end portion is provided by the head 13b and the holder 26, the seat (26") being formed on the holder; a hypodermic needle having a liquid-tight connection with the rigid end portion; a flexible and rupturable (liaphragm bearing on said seat, means being provided in each embodiment for clamping the marginal portion of the diaphragm on the seat, so that the diaphragm has a liquidtight connection with the rigid end portion; and a charge of liquid hermetically sealed by the container and the diaphragm. Each embodiment also comprises means for permitting the displacement of the diaphragm from its normal position, by pressure exerted through the liquid by the compression of the body portion. The rigid end portion constitutes a stable connection between the needle and the compressible body portion, and a stable support for the diaphragm, and presents a rigid grip between the needle and the body portion, whereby the syringe may be conveniently handled, Without exerting pressure on the bod portion when the needle is being presse into body tissues.
In each embodiment of the invention the rigid end portion is provided with an annular seat, formed as shown by Figures 1 and 3, by the inner Wall of the groove 16, and by Figures 4 and 5, by the portion 26, a compressible annular clamping flange, formed as shown by Figures 1 and 3, by the portion ofthe head forming the outer side of the groove 16, and by Figures 4and 5, by the portion 26". Said seat and flange form an annular groove in which the margin of the diaphragm is inserted and clamped by the compression of the flange, a liquid-tight joint being thus formed, carried entirely by the said end portion.
I claim:
1. A hypodermic syringe comprising a container-having a compressible body portion and a rigid end portion provided with a rigid annular seat, and with a compressible annular clamping flange forming, with the seat, an annular groove, a fiexble and rupturable diaphragm, the margin of which is inserted insaid groove and clamped therein by the compression of said flange to form a liquid-tight joint, and a hypodermic needle having a liquid-tight connection with the rigid end portion.
2. A hypodermic syringe comprising a container having a compressible body portion and a rigid end portion, the latter being composed of a rigid head integral with the body lportion and provided with a socket, and a rigid holder having a liquid-tight fit in said socket, and provided with a rigid annular seat, and with a compressible annular clamping flange forming, with said seat, an annular groove, a flexible and rupturable diaphragm, the margin of which is inserted in said groove and clamped therein by the compression of said flange to form a liquidtight joint, and a hypodermic needle having a liquid-tight connection with the rigid end portion.
3. A hypodermic syringe comprising a container having a compressible body portion and a rigid end portion, the latter being Composed of a rigid head integral with the body portion and provided with a socket, and a rigid holder having a liquid-tight it in said socket, and provided with a seat for the marginal portion of a diaphragm, a hypodermic needle having a liquid-tight connection with said head and holder, and constituting the container outlet, a flexible and rupturable diaphragm bearing at its marginal portion on said seat, and means carried by said rigid holder for clamping the marginal portion of the diaphragm against the seat, so that the diaphragm has a liquid-tightA connection with the container,
said holder being provided with a relatively stift' annulus, bearing upon and covering a portion of the inner side of the diaphragm, and confined by said clamping means.
In testimony whereof I have aiixed my signature.
