Abstract

<PICT:0876466/III/1> A ring 3 of electrically conductive material, e.g. silver, is attached to a heating coil 2 of silver-plated copper tubing to restrict the molten zone 5 of a rod of semi-conductor material and so enable rods having a diameter greater than 15 mm. to be treated by causing the molten zone to move downwardly. The ring 3 is provided with a cooling coil 6 which is included in the cooling circuit for the heating coil 2 but is short-circuited by a strap 4 to by-pass the heating current.
