Class 72 A method of heat treating a body of semi-conducting material comprises neutralizing the effect of gravity by means of a magnetic field interacting with an electric current flowing through the body. As shown, a wire 4 of germanium may be supported at its ends by electrodes 2, 3, within a tube 1 which is surrounded by a coil 5. The field produced by the coil acts on a current flowing the wire to prevent the latter from sagging when heated to a temperature 15‹C. below the melting point of the germanium. The wire may be rotated and a protective gas, which may contain an impurity substance, may be introduced into the tube. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the wire may be supported in a magnetic field the intensity of which increases in the direction in which gravity acts.
