Abstract

851,099. Glass tubes or rods. MULLARD Ltd. June 24, 1959, No. 21691/59. Class 56. A glass rod or tube has a precision-formed cylindrical surface adjacent which the glass contains small cavities or bubbles. The rod or tube is shaped with the aid of a metal former containing occluded gas by heating the temperature being such that the gas is given off to form bubbles adjacent the surface of the glass which lies against the former. Preferably a copper or nickel-iron alloy former is used which has been stoved in a hydrogen atmosphere which it absorbs. For a glass tube, a copper rod with precision-formed outer surface is inserted into the tube which is shrunk onto the rod in known manner by gas burners. The rod may be additionally heated by passing an electric current through the rod or by eddy currents. After cooling, the copper rod is placed under tension so that it stretches slightly and is withdrawn. In a glass rod, a precision-bore copper tube with one end sealed has a glass rod inserted and heated till the glass fits the tube. Similar heating and additional heating is used The cooled tube is dissolved away by acid. The rate at which the gas is given off is controlled and may be chosen so that the surface contains half-formed bubbles or round pits. The usual diameter of the bubbles in the glass is from 0.1 to 0À5 mms. but bubbles up to 1À5 mms. are also formed.
