Abstract

1,035,224. Heating liquids electrically. TEMPLETON COAL CO. Inc. March 18, 1963, No. 10609/63. Heading H5H. [Also in Division B1] Liquid in an electrically non-conductive container having a well at the bottom is heated-e.g. for distillation-by electrically conductive material positioned in the well and heated by an induction coil mounted around the well. Conductive bodies 20 distributed either uniformly or in ring formation within a well 14 of an insulating distillation flask, and mounted in a perforated plate 22 resting in the base of the well, are heated by induction coil 16. The bodies may be of nickel/chromium alloy, platinum, graphite, metal/graphite mixture, or sintered metal, in the form of rods, tubes, or plane or arcuate strips (Fig. 4 to 18, not shown). They may be protected from corrosion by glass or quartz in the form of a close-fitting sleeve or, to permit relative expansion, a loose-fitting envelope, the vacant space in which may either be evacuated or filled with a comminuted heat exchange material. Alternatively, a body having a close-fitting sleeve may be in the form of a split tube to permit relative expansion. The bodies may be screwed into their supporting plate, or may have projecting studs at their lowermost ends for insertion into orifices therein; a tubular body may alternatively be supported on legs formed by its protective sleeve. Two induction coils may be mounted at different levels around the well.
