Abstract

838,838. Nuclear fuel elements. SULZER FRERES S. A. Sept. 12, 1958 [Sept. 12, 1957], No. 29325/58. Class 39(4). [Also in Group XXII] A nuclear fuel element comprises a cooling tube embedded in a rod of fissile material, the rod being composed of separated sections arranged along the tube. Fig. 1 shows Zr cooling tubes 1 embedded in fissile material 2 and surrounded by graphite powder 6 in a graphite tube 5. An Al jacket thermally insulated by a space 7 is provided. The fissile material may have longitudinal, transverse or helical slots. The rods are made by fitting sections of fissile material 9, Fig. 3, along the cooling tube, with perforated graphite spacers 3, and heating the whole in a graphite mould 10 in a ceramic vacuum vessel 11 from the bottom upwards, so that the fissile sections melt, forming an intermetallic bond with the surface of the tube. The coolant may be heavy water.
