[Also in Division C7] A compact refractory nuclear fuel material has a structure comprising fine grains of UC containing inclusions of UC 2 and surrounded by Be 2 C, the atomic proportion of Be being 1 to 12%. The material may be made by melting a mixture of uranium carbide and UBe 13 in an inert atmosphere or by heating and melting a mixture of UO 2 , C and BeO. The material is resistant to corrosion by C0 2 coolant at high temperature.
