Abstract

In a nuclear reactor fuel element, the fissile material, enriched uranium oxide, is mixed and heated with silicon dioxide, and/or aluminium dioxide with one or more of magnesium, lead, zirconium, sodium or potassium oxides to form a glass. The glass element is surrounded by a glass forming composition and may have a casing of silicon carbide, carbon, molybdenum or beryllium oxide. It has a melting point below the operating temperature of the reactor.
